YVONNE GERVAIS It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sister, sister-in-law and aunt, Yvonne Gervais, on Friday, March 31, 2017. Yvonne was born in Elie, MB on October 6, 1938. After completing her grade 12 in St. Eustache in 1956, she worked for three years at her father's General Store and at the same time worked as a telephone operator for MTS in Elie. She then pursued a teaching career and specialized in the teaching of French as a second language. Her specialty in that field followed courses taken at the University of Ottawa, Université des Langues at Grenoble, France, the at Cap Rouge, Quebec, as well as Collège Universitaire de Saint-Boniface, University of Winnipeg and obtained her degree at the University of Manitoba. For seven years of her teaching career, Yvonne enjoyed teaching at Arthur Day Junior High and for 17 years while at Transcona Collegiate Institute, she challenged her students to become fully bilingual and in many cases succeeded although she was not teaching an immersion program. For several years, she was a member of the Provincial French Committee for grades 7 to 12 and lent her expertise as French Co-ordinator for Transcona Springfield School Division. Yvonne enjoyed several interests: nature, dogs, reading, painting, stained glass, music picking up violin as her retirement project. In her more active years, she enjoyed cycling, x-country skiing, downhill skiing, as well as horse-back riding in her neighbouring backyard Birds Hill Park. All the while, Yvonne never ceased to admire the beauty in nature: trees and sunsets especially in her retirement years on the beautiful Lee River in the Lac du Bonnet area. Yvonne leaves to mourn her three sisters: Annette (Late Marcel Beaudry), Eva, Pauline (Cyril Legault) and her four brothers: Adelard OMI, Cyril (Lucienne), Paul (Carol) and Maurice (Emily). Yvonne was predeceased by her parents, Arthur (1974) and Aurore (Cormier) (1965); two sisters, Bernadette (Hector Beaudry) and Lucille (Frank McCarthy); and a niece Louise Beaudry. She will also be remembered by her several cousins, 22 nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and nephews. As requested by Yvonne, cremation will take place and a private family celebration will be held at a later date. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion. If desired, donations in Yvonne's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. I just learned of Mme Gervais' passing earlier today. I was suprised and saddened upon hearing the news. Mme Gervais was my Français de base teacher throughout high school at Transcona Collegiate Insititute. She was a master teacher. She spoke to us exclusively in French - and it would have been so much easier for her to speak to us in English on occasion, but her self-discipline was exceptional. The fact that she would never switch to English was a testament to her faith in our ability to learn, to reason and to understand what the lesson was about. It forced me to exercise my mind and develop my French more fully. In the classroom, was firm, knowledgeable and kind. She insisted on respect and gave it out as well. She instilled in me a great passion for the French language. I entered university and took Intro French because of how much I liked her course throughout French. I took all that she taught us and declared French my major during my second year at university. I then completed my B.A. and B.Ed. and successfully got a job as a language monitor in French. I saw her at Kildonan Place shortly thereafter and shared with her the good news and that she was so proud that not only me, but another former student of hers that year earned that job! This was a tribute to her dedicated planning and innovation in the classroom. I wish her family the strength to deal with this loss and peace upon Mme Gervais' soul. I will miss her. - Posted by: Sharad Srivastava (Former student) on: Apr 23, 2017
