DAVID NEVILLE SHARPE July 13, 1945 April 12, 2017 Dave died, as he had lived, surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his parents, Russ and Eileen; his infant sister Rosalind; and his brother-in-law Patrick. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years, Elaine; his children, Samantha (Josh), Heather (Mike), Michael (Christine); his grandchildren, Parker, Kate, Emma, Allison, Elizabeth and Hazel; his siblings, Gord (Christa), Marilyn (Robin), Rob (Nicole), Susan, Bill (Kathi), Brian (Patti), Don (Tracy) and Doug (Heather). Also missing Dave will be in-laws, John (Christie), Gary and Ken (Lily). Dave was immensely proud of his many nieces and nephews. Sports played an important role in his early life and continued to be a lifetime passion more for the camaraderie than for the exercise and competition. In his youth, he played competitive soccer, football and hockey. He later played tennis and curled, usually on family teams. He golfed with a variety of groups, for many years enjoying winter golf trips south with "the boys" and for the last ten years golfing Manitoba courses with the Happy Hackers. He played all racquet sports and for the last 40 years was a member of the Winnipeg Squash Club, his home away from home. Emulating his father and grandfather, Dave became a civil engineer, graduating U of M in 1970. Most of his career was spent in the field of land development. During his career, Dave valued the many enduring relationships he established with those working in the construction and house building industries. After retiring, Dave enjoyed winters in Arizona, golfing at Longbow and making side trips to Palm Springs. After Elaine "dragged him off" to Europe the first time, he eagerly returned, especially enjoying France and Italy. By far, the most important element in Dave's life was family. Dave always considered himself lucky to have been born into such a large, active, supportive family. His parents were excellent role models and the family remained tight knit long after their passing. Special occasions were celebrated with large gatherings and spontaneous get-togethers were frequent and usually quite loud. David's greatest pride was his three children and the compassionate, responsible adults they became. They, and his adored grandchildren, are his legacy. An informal celebration of life will be held at the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club at 275 Stradbrook Avenue on Friday, April 28 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. with speeches commencing at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to a charity of one's choice. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Dear Elaine & Family Just a note to let you know how sorry I was to hear of Dave's passing. Dave was such a loveable character and gifted athlete. Being 5 years younger, I always looked up to him. When I was in my teens, I would watch him play at the community club when he was a star player for the River Heights Cardinals. Later, when I joined Phi Delta Theta, "Sharpie" was one of the older brothers who was beloved. Years later, in the mid-80s, it was really cool to buy the house next door to you on Victoria Crescent and get to know you & Dave a lot better. As a bonus, I got to play hockey with Dave, Robin and a number of Phi Delts with the Tuxedo Colts - so many great memories from those years. Dave was always very good to me and I was always inspired by the way he truly enjoyed life. He really was a good man. I just wanted you to know that I'm thinking about you and am in your corner during these difficult times.
