LAURRY VALAIR (VAL) VANDEKERKHOVE It is with deep sadness that we announce his passing at Seven Oaks Hospital on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the age of 74 years. Val will be lovingly remembered by his wife Flo and his daughters, Michele (Craig), Donna (Sayed), Monique (Paul) and Nicole. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Cory, Nikita, Wes, Jesse, Hannah and Meghan and his great-grandchildren, Jack and Sophia. He loved them all deeply. He is also survived by his brothers: Allen (Loreen), Charles (Germaine) and Jerry (Karen), his sister-in-law Rita, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and neighbours. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Gabrielle, his brother Donald, his brother Ron and sister-in-law Cecile. Val began his working life as a heavy equipment operator and later a long-distance truck driver. He formed many long-lasting friendships during his life and cherished them always. He lived his life with a spirit of joie de vivre and you always knew when he entered the room. In spite of the challenges of illness during the past six years and the many long months spent in hospital over this time, his patience and fortitude impressed us all. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 27 at 11:00 a.m. St. Bernadette Parish, 820 Cottonwood Rd., Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations in Val's memory may be made to the Health Sciences Centre Foundation, PW112-700 William Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1R9. E.J. COUTU & CO. • Our deep condolences to the family. Val and Paul go back a long way when Paul (a country boy from Quebec) heard Val speak french at a truck stop somewhere in Ontario which resulted in Paul's move to Winnipeg where he and Flo and girls all made him feel welcome and helped navigate his way. They became good trucking buddies and our families became lifelong friends. Val and Paul go back to the days of leisure suits, men's perms and Intellivision. We all enjoyed many great times together, and shared in sad times. We spent a wonderful weekend together at Moth Lake and especially remember ordering in Chinese food and sitting at the dining table enjoying midnight 'lunches' Though we are unable to be there for the service our thoughts will be with all of you. Rest in Peace Val-you fought a long and hard battle. May Paul and Val someday reunite to play another game of Intellivision.
