Born: May 06, 1929
Date of Passing: Jul 06, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORV CHRISTOPHERSON May 6, 1929 - July 6, 2017 Norv was known and loved in the Oak Bank community for his way of making life better for others with a minimum of fuss. He passed to Heaven in the same way, quietly leaving this world in the middle of the night. Norv will be very sadly missed by Arline, his wife and best friend of 62 years. Everyone in Oak Bank knew that when they saw one, the other was very close by. He is survived by his children Craig (Brenda), Karen (Jack) and Lynn (Roy), seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Norv was predeceased by his parents Harry and Lily, infant brother Lloyd, sister Verna Reid and her husband Lorne. He will also be greatly missed by his many relatives, friends, and the community. Norv was born and educated in Oak Bank. After graduating, he worked at the TD Bank in Transcona. He then went into business with his Uncle John Kruger at Suburban Electric in Oak Bank. For many years, Norv was known in the community as an electrician, working together with his good friend and brother-in-law Lorne Reid. So many people in the community will have fond memories of Norv and Lorne, both for their work ethic, and their obvious enjoyment of spending time together. Suburban Electric expanded to Christopherson Insurance, and this family business included Arline and Norv, as well as many employees over the years who were like family. Norv was a Godly man who lived his faith. He put 'gentle' into the word gentleman through his caring and compassion for those around him. He served in many capacities at the Oak Bank United Church, including being the first Sunday School Superintendent, a Board Member, Trustee and Elder. He was a founder of Springfield Boys Parliament, along with Don Reid and Lind Barbour. Norv's love of music was a huge part of his life. He sang with the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen for 52 years. Norv sang in the Oak Bank United Church choir his entire life, as well as performed in Dinner Theatres, and entertained with Arline at the personal care home. Norv was extremely involved in the Oak Bank community, which included volunteer firefighting, Scouts, hockey club concerts, Beautification Committee, and coaching baseball. Norv was blessed to visit many countries and cultures travelling around the world - wherever Arlie wanted to go was the place that Norv wanted to be. Norv wouldn't want anyone to go out of their way, but if you don't have plans on the day, a celebration of his life will be led by Maureen McCartney at the Oak Bank United Church on Wednesday, July 12 at 3:00 p.m. If so desired, donations may be made to Oak Bank United Church Memorial Fund, or singcanadaharmony.ca seasonsfunerals.ca

My first recollection of Norv was watching him drive an old model T Ford with a bug body down main street of Oak Bank. He had to reach around and give the rear wheel a tug to get the car moving! Norv was probably the most honest, friendly, and giving person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If something was going on in Oak Bank, Norv was there. He was the go-to guy when something had to be done. He will be missed by so many people. We have lost a true leader and friend. But, on a cool, clear night, if you listen closely, you may hear the melodic sounds of John Jacob Jinglerheimer Schmidt coming from above! - Posted by: Jim Beattie (friend) on: Jul 14, 2017

Norv & Arline have proven to be the golden thread sewn through the fabric of time for so many who call Oak Bank, and all of Springfield "Home." I too, met this delightful couple in the fall of 1988 when my two young sons and I moved to Oakbank. Having overlooked renewing my insurance policy a few years later, I was distraught when my car was broken into, and my family's ski equipment, along with all contents of my vehicle were stolen from Springhill Winter Park. With his famous "gentle" smile in place, he assured me that he & Mrs. C. had taken care of me: they renewed my policy, telling me in his words, that they understood how the busy life of a single mom who worked fulltime could prevent me from remembering all. "Think of all the things you must remember every day- you're bound to forget one or two". That was the Christophersons..... more than willing, they were happy to help. While on their many walks through town, Mr. C always had a ready comment for me when they saw me ride by on my motorcycle. I always thought he was a bit surprised by a "girl" riding a bike. It has since come to me that he simply cared. About each and every community member, and the world at large. This couple: The Christophersons- they ARE the epitome of kindness, gentleness, and what every one of us aspires to be. As the family has been blessed all through life to have had such a magnificent "Patriarch," Bless you twice now, as you walk the paths ahead, knowing he has never left your side. - Posted by: Walby Lawson Family (Friends) on: Jul 12, 2017

Our family was deeply saddened to hear of Norv's passing. Everyone knows what a warm and caring man he was. My mom dearly loved Norv. He was more than a boss to her as he quickly became a close, personal friend - a friendship she treasured throughout her life. Norv was always so good to her - and also my dad after mom's passing. Norv will definitely leave an irreplaceable hole in the hearts of so very many. Our deepest condolences to Arl and family xo - Posted by: Wendy (Palidwor) Cooper (Family Friend) on: Jul 12, 2017

Our friendship began 50 years ago through a shared love of barbershop harmony. We shared many trips to shows both locally and internationally. Highlights were the times Norv emceed. His unique presentations assured the audience they would be well entertained. Because of Norv and Arlene's participation we began attending the dinner theatre performances. The excellent food, hilarious shows and welcoming people made us repeat attendees for many years. Throughout the years we shared so many experiences, celebrations, dinners, getting to know their family and Rollag in the rain and mud. Being in his company was of caring, singing, laughter, and love. No words can truly express how much we will miss him. Linda & Lenard ( friends) - Posted by: Linda and Lenard Soltys (Friends) on: Jul 12, 2017

Mr. Christopherson was a long time family friend to the Argles, my Mom's family. His kindness and gentle demeanour made him a pillar in the community. How could anyone not like him. No matter where you met him, he always had time for a friendly visit. We need more "Norvs" in this world. - Posted by: Andy Bell (Friend) on: Jul 12, 2017

It was with great sadness that I just heard that Norv is no longer with us on this earthly plain. I only knew him a few years but he was indeed a delightful man and "gentleman". I can say with certainty that he was the epitome of the phrase from the Bible "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". I shall surely miss his friendly smile and I can say that many will miss his wonderful clever comments when reading the scriptures. My thoughts are with you Arline and may you be comforted by the fact that Norv is truly with the Lord. John Kaye - Posted by: John Kaye (Friend) on: Jul 11, 2017

For as long as I can remember Norv was a part of my life as a neighbour right across the street, then as my teacher in Sunday school, then a mentor when I became a teacher in Sunday school and working together in dinner theater, a family friend, my friend I will miss those pats on the shoulder, the way he could tell you it wasn't quite right and still make you feel good. I find it hard to picture Oak Bank without him he will truly be missed. My deepest sympathy to Arlie and family. - Posted by: FAIRLIE ARGLE (friend) on: Jul 10, 2017

Our hearts go out to you Arlie, and family, during this difficult time. There are so many memories that we have that include Norv, from when you first lived across the street from us to the "toast to the bride speech" at our wedding. I kept that can of peanut butter for a long time! We so enjoyed the Barbershop Quartet days when singing with the Sandbanks (with Uncle Keith). It will be difficult to think of this world without him but I know that wherever he is now that he will be spreading happiness and joy. - Posted by: Betty-Jean and John Armstrong (friends) on: Jul 10, 2017

Arline and family, I am truly saddened hearing that Norm has departed! Meeting Norm during the farm electrification days as I was running the construction crew located at McF farm on west side of Oakbank. The interactions with John /Jack Bracken and Norm left me with great respect for the Suburban Electric (I believe this to be the official name) owner/Norm and his friend Jack. The afternoon with Norm and Arline a few months ago was memorable and dear to me. Norm a great person/friend/associate you will be missed, our loss and HEAVEN's worthy addition. - Posted by: Cam Neirinck (Friend) on: Jul 08, 2017

First met Norv in 1976 when I joined Barbershop harmony. Norv was a most helpful and generous person who was never recognized and did not want to be for his very active participation in Barbershop singing events. He sang Baritone with the SandBanks quartet and they always were a very entertaining group. My wife Aggie and I were fortunate to travel with Norv and Arlene to the International Barbershop convention in Minneapolis about 25 years ago and we had a very enjoyable time with Norv's wry sense of humour. He will be missed as he made this world a better place to live in. Our condolences to Arlene and all members of the family. He will be missed by many. So very sorry to hear of his passing. The first person we met when we came to Oakbank 36 years ago to purchase house insurance. Always a smile and hello from this wonderful couple no matter where we would meet. Always a laugh if it happened to be a restaurant we tried to support in the community. Love and sympathy from Don and Lorraine Hughes. - Posted by: Don and Lorraine Hughes and families. (Forever friends .) on: Jul 07, 2017
