Ray was such great man. I used to see him once or twice a year when he would come into the office and he would always leave us all laughing, at some of his funny his stories. He shall be missed by so many. - Posted by: Carol McLeod (Friend ) on: Oct 13, 2017

Dear Jane and family, Kathie and I are in Europe and have been shocked to learn of Ray's death. Our connection with Ray goes all the way back to Kelvin High School and the initial success of the Braunstein team. From there Ray took his beloved sport to the highest level establishing teaching schools along the way, making world champions and establishing a very successful business and residential insurance business. We are the beneficiaries of Ray's work as an insurance agent on our behalf. Our sincere blessings and condolences to the family and we are so sorry not being able to be present to pay our respects to a man who was a great friend and who also was always ready to help us in our business insurance needs as well as advising on the necessary coverage for all our family members in their family needs. RIP Ray! My sincere condolences to those near and dear. Ray or Moose was "The King" and Val was "The Queen" through the eyes of a teenage "rink rat" hang-a-round picking up pointers in the early 70's. The entertaining comedic Granite rink one-up-man-ship was an experience of a lifetime and Ray was the master. Ray was a passionate man who went through a lot of brooms back in the day on his way to "leading" the world. The Turnbull/Ursaliak (Wally) partnership, as in "T U in Wpg" was an early curling school that started taking curling world-wide as we watched the counties getting on board one by one. His best bonspiel tip was in The Pas at 30 below when we got into the "dry cold" cement block motel and he didn't shut off the hot water in the shower until the condensation was dripping from the room ceiling and the atmosphere in there was warm and humidified. Ray added value to curling nurturing and development. - Posted by: Mark Hlady (Granite Jrs, back up babysitter, spiel replacement) on: Oct 11, 2017

I was so sad to hear about Uncle Ray's passing. A longtime family friend, I knew Ray all my life. i remember him visiting us in Montreal when I was a child and giving me a stuffed bison. It was a treasured stuffed animal. Throughout all my life, I always loved seeing Uncle Ray. He was always so animated and happy to see you. Rest in peace Uncle Ray, you will be missed. I am very very sadden to learn of Ray's passing. I am so thankful to have crossed paths with Ray back in my early 20s when I was fortunate enough to join Ray's "curling world". My life is so much richer knowing Ray, I have enjoyed many memorable trips, treasure a ton of wonderful memories and have made numerous friends through Ray. I echo John's comments that I can never say an adequate thank you to Ray - but my world is a far better place knowing you! Rest In Peace Ray. Ray Turnbull was a family friend for almost 50 years. Ray was always generous, warm and very funny. We have all experienced having Chinese food and Ray picking up the tab for everyone. But when the food arrived , he insisted that the biggest eaters walk around the room once while the rest of us got our food first! Of course Ray liked to cook and he would entertain his friends at the same time with his favourite music, and always lots if red wine! Ray truly loved the Granite Curling Club. Mixed party nights on Fridays were a tradition at the Granite that we all enjoyed. Ray would nominate himself as cheerleader and prompt everyone to be up and ready to dance at "11:04" and he would make sure dancing started with a popular song like Memphis Tennessee by Johnny Rivers, or CCR's Down on the Corner. Ray was a great storyteller (mostly true) often followed by one of his favourite expressions "As God is my Witness". He was also an excellent speaker at curling banquets and other such functions. He sometimes spoke of writing his memoirs which would surely be a best seller in the sporting world. Ray was a loyal friend and always made his friends feel special. He was a joker with a quick wit and always fun to be around. Ask Larry Ladyman or Bob Whitaker about loyalty. They were among his friends from his teenage years in Fort Gary. Ray has played bridge with them, sometimes weekly, for almost 60 years. Moosie was a specialist in nick naming many of his close friends...We were all familiar with Bronco, Brooker T, Barney, Snapper, Brownie, Hawk, Smokey and Arnold the Cat. As an athlete, Ray was very competitive and did very well in curling, having won a Brier championship in 1965 and then competing in the world championship, known as the Scotch Cup in those days. Ray turned his talents to teaching the great game of curling throughout Europe and North America, inspired by his desire to improve the game everywhere. He was then invited to be a curling spokesperson and commentator on TSN where he continued for 25 years. Ray has left quite a legacy in the curling world as a broadcaster, teacher, and competitor . Not bad for a guy with, as he would say jokingly, "Grade 10, no French". Rest in Peace Moosie, you'll be missed. Having left Winnipeg at a young age I only have memories of Ray from Junior High and High School. I do remember the Curling Championship and how excited we all were to have our classmates taking such an amazing place in our history and especially at such a young age.
