CATERINA MAURO (nee ANANIA) May 13, 1929 - October 5, 2017 It is with deep sadness that the family of Caterina Mauro mourns her passing. Caterina was born in Amato, Italy on May 13, 1929. Caterina was predeceased by her parents, Angela and Guiseppe Anania, her husband Serafino Mauro, infant son Agostino, brothers, Gregorio, Raffaele, Gaetano, Guiseppe and Antonio, sisters Theresa and Carmella, and sister-in-law Caterina Anania. Caterina is survived by her children Rosina and Frank Scarpino, Medicine Hat, AB, Angelina and Antonio Grande, Gus (Agostino) and Cathie Mauro, Cathy and Tim Gabrielson, San Diego, CA, grandchildren Tina and Lucio Fernandez, Lori and James Seeley, Amanda and Shaun Hagemeister, Concettina Grande and Shawn Langstaff, Serafina and Dylan Ryder, James Mauro, Stephanie Gabrielson and Nicholas Gabrielson; great-grandchildren Gabriella, Francesca, Sophia, Gianna and Antonio, brother Angelo and Wilma Anania, sisters-in-law Maria Anania, Victoria Aiello, Maria and Antonio Cappellano, Frank and Maria Mauro, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Caterina was born in Amato, Catanzaro, Italy. Her husband Serafino came to Canada to find a better life for his young family. Caterina and Rosina soon followed to begin their new life in Winnipeg. Family was everything to Caterina as she not only raised her own children, but took great care of her many grandchildren. Caterina was unfailingly selfless, she truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; chatting with her friends and family both in Italy and Winnipeg, hosting Sunday dinners often and always making sure no one left her home hungry (mangia). Caterina enjoyed gardening, cooking, knitting/crocheting and listening to Italian music. Though Caterina battled advancing Alzheimer's, her eyes would still light up each and every time she saw her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. She will be lovingly remembered for her warm smile and her innate ability to bring laughter to all those around her. Caterina will be missed by many; she effortlessly revealed what it meant to live life with courage, resilience, kindness and love. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. The family would like to thank the numerous healthcare, respite and home care workers who kept Caterina comfortable in her son's home; their caring and compassion will never be forgotten by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Caterina can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Winnipeg, Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or charity of choice. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic church, 510 River Ave. with Rev. Father Sam Argenziano celebrant. • To Cathy and Family. I remember visiting mom many years ago when we were back in the Peg visiting family. She asked if I was hungry for a snack. Little did I know I was about to engage in eating a 12 course meal filled with such wonderful flavors. She was so happy to fill my belly up with food made with love. I will never forget the most precious smile on her face during our visit. Your mom was a special woman and I am grateful to have had the pleasure of meeting her and the beautiful family that she has raised. So sorry I was unable to make it home for the services but my thoughts and prayers are with the family. Love you.
