LOIS E. BALCAEN April 12, 1929 - October 22, 2017 Lois passed away peacefully on the morning of October 22, 2017. She went to join her beloved husband Charlie, son Teddy, five siblings, and her parents. Her love for us all was truly unconditional. She approached all of life's challenges with strength and support. She was our "PILLAR" she never judged, always there to support us in whatever any of us were doing or going through. Her legacy, wisdom and love will live on through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: son Larry and Terry Balcaen; daughter Charlene and Keith Atkins; daughter-in-law Joan Balcaen; grandchildren Dawn-Anne and Kyle Swain, Christy and Chuck Olson, Cody Balcaen and Cory Balcaen; great-grandchildren, Kobe Swain, Wyatt and Jack Olson; stepgrandchildren Sandra Atkins, Dennis and Annaliese Atkins and boys; Gary and Chantelle Atkins and family; Stephanie and Shane Emms and family; Ashley Brady and family; Matthew and Erin Brady and family, and her sister Shirley Lawson of Shoal Lake. Lois loved and enjoyed life, she had a lot of talent from gardening, love of animals, crafting and cooking for her crew every Sunday, her home was never locked. The door to her home and fridge were always open. Throughout her life she always had a great sense of humour, wit and a little sass right to the end of her journey. Trust us, she wouldn't want us to sit around crying and mourning over her. She would want us to cherish the memories and close bond of family she knit to carry on and to live our lives to the fullest. In honour of her wishes there will be no formal service. A private family gathering will be held. The family wishes to thank the staff on Maple North Hall of Tudor House for their loving care and support for Lois and her family. Laugh, Love and Live (Her style) Condolences may be left at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

  • Hi I used to wait on Lois when I worked at Gaynor foods in Selkirk. I could always count on her for a laugh or two. Always friendly, always smiling, she was one of my favorite customers. Sorry for your loss, she will playing tricks on you from up above. Glad to have known her. - Posted by: Laverne Teasdake Adolphe (friend) on: Nov 21, 2017

  • Our sincere sympathies to the family of Lois Balcaen. Our memories of her are all such happy ones especially the summers we spent at the cottage at Netley Creek. Lois and Charlie's door was always open and the coffee pot always on. She always greeted us with a smile and a joke or two. She welcomed our children whenever they snuck over there without permission to swim off of their dock, which was much easier than at our place especially for the younger ones. We always knew where to find them. Lois took such pride in her gardens which were so beautiful. She and her brother Barney enjoyed teasing our boys (and us too) as well. They loved it!!Sometimes they had some "CRITTERS" in cages for the kids to visit. We would sometimes go out for walks that often ended up at the Balcaens. Sometimes my mom Runa (Magnusson) and I liked to drop over for coffee and a nice chat. We were always welcome. Plus if ever there was a Netley Creek party, most of the time it was at the Balcaens. That corner lot was "rockin." I so enjoyed time spent with their family when out at the cottage with Mom and Fred. Thank you Lois for being the beautiful person you were. You will be missed by many as we all go through our memories of you. Our condolance to your family - From Elaine Kurt and family. - Posted by: Elaine Donnelly (Family frienship) on: Nov 03, 2017

  • Our condolences to the Balcaen family. Lois was an honest, hardworking and excellent neighbour to have. We always enjoyed her honest conversation. She will be missed. Rest in Peace Mrs. Balcaen. - Posted by: The Rodrigue Family (Friend and Neighbour) on: Oct 24, 2017

  • My deepest condolences to your family from the Georgette (Rocan) and Fernand Balcaen family (son of Joseph, who was the son of Oscar Balcaen), French side of the family from La Broquerie. Both our parents passed away within two months of each other 3 years ago but I think some of us met at our centennial celebration many years ago. We often think about our "English cousins ". Our thoughts and prayers are with you. With kindest regards, Ginette Balcaen on behalf of my family. - Posted by: ginette balcaen (distant cousin from the Oscar descendants) on: Oct 24, 2017
