Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIRENE FRANCOISE MANSWELL March 7, 1936 - January 5, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend, Irene Françoise Manswell (nee Thériault). The eldest daughter to Ernest and Marie Louise Theriault of Saskatchewan, born March 7, 1936, died on January 5, 2018 in Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Clyde Manswell, in October, 2017 and also by her many Martin-Theriault siblings. Irene is survived by her children, Gisele (Curtis Charr), Miriam (George Gushulak), Monique (Henry Vasquez) and Robert (Kimberly Lenz). She is also survived by three siblings, Claire Soulodre, Frank Theriault (Geraldine) and Andy Theriault (Pat-deceased), one aunt (Celine Bauche), six grandchildren (Alexa, Ashley, Maya, Jaden, Daniel and Jasmine) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Irene spent her early years on the family farm in Mutrie, Saskatchewan. It was there that she learned the values of hard work and family fun; many traditions were passed down from her mother and father. Attending church services and making fresh bread, sucre a la crème, tortière, and cipâte at Christmas are some traditions to name a few. She moved to Winnipeg when she was a young teen, where she attended St. Joseph's Academy. After high school, Irene went on to pursue studies in nursing at St. Boniface Nursing School. After graduating, she worked in St. Boniface as a public health nurse and shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life, Clyde Manswell. They married in 1961. After four years of Clyde working as a teacher in Gimli and Irene as a nurse in Lundar, they moved back to Winnipeg and adopted the first of their children, Gisele. They then moved to Belgium for Clyde to pursue his medical degree while Irene worked as a nurse. They came back to Canada in 1971 and lived in New Brunswick, where the twins, Miriam and Monique, were born. They moved back to Winnipeg that same year. Robert was born two years later. Together they raised four children, moving from the city to St. Germain, to Lockport and then back to the city. Wherever they went, they always created lasting friendships. Irene was happiest when with her family and friends. She was well-known for her hospitality and good cooking. She was an engaged parent who encouraged her children to pursue education, sports, music and dance. Many summers were spent camping across Manitoba and Canada in a tent trailer to see the sights and visit friends. Her love of sports was evident as she cheered on her kids in their sports activities. She even tried her hand at coaching! Along with her sister Claire, she was a faithful season-ticket holder for the Winnipeg Jets and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers many years over. She knew how to have fun and fun she had at many a Banjo Bowl! As the kids got older, she had more time to devote to volunteering with Age & Opportunity. When the kids moved out, she opened her home to many international students who came to study from various parts of the world. Always a mother first, she was determined to teach them English as she showed them around Winnipeg and took care of them. That is what she did; she took care of people. She was a nurse at heart! To her friends and family near and far, your support and love lift us as we cherish our memories. Cremation has taken place, care of Korban Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 12, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Parish, 847 St. Mary's Rd., Winnipeg, MB with refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to A & O: Support Services for Older Adults (204-956-6440), IRCOM-Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba - 204-943-8765 (Canadahelps.org), Manitoba Chapter of the Celiac Association - 204-772-6979, or a charity of your choice. Gisele, Miriam, Monique, Robert, Claire & families. Our thoughts & prayers go out to you during this time of loss. A brave & generous soul has been called to her place in Heaven. She is at peace now joining Clyde in their eternal Home. I have many fond memories of Irene with her hearty laugh & caring generous spirit from our 3 years of Nursing School at S.B.H. I also recall sharing an apartment with Irene & Lucille in those fun filled post graduation single days in Winnipeg. I do remember many summer get togethers & BBQ's at the Manswell residence in Winnipeg & Lockport. Clyde & Irene opened up their home to many friends & it overflowed with the love, laughter & hospitality of this wonderful family during these many celebrations. May God bless you all with strength & courage at this difficult time. May the support of friends & family from far & near sustain you along with all your precious memories. There is a prayer candle burning brightly this week in remembrance of Irene & Clyde at my parish church in Plainsboro. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated the week of February 4th in their memory. With sincere sympathy, Helen & Tamis Oshiro, Carla & Ernie Hsin. - Posted by: Helen Oshiro (nursing friend) on: Jan 19, 2018
