STEPHEN MICHAEL SCHAFFER It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Steve Schaffer on January 30, 2018 with his family by his side. Steve was born on July 29, 1971 in Hamilton, Ontario and lived to the age of 46. He will lovingly be remembered by his wife Maureen; son Ben Schaffer; stepchildren, Christopher Scott (Ana), Keslie Scott (Steven); his parents, Richard and Elaine Schaffer; brother Ryan Schaffer (Lara) niece and nephew Nicolas and Emily and his puppy Samantha who he brought into our family as a gift for us. He will be dearly missed by his in-laws, Anne (John), Debbie (Harv), Rod (Pat), Mike (Ann), Cindy (Colin), Cam (Kristen). Nieces and nephews, Nelson (Amanda), Matthew (Deidre), Nicole (Jeff), Kristen (Colin), Ryan, Kayla (Tony), Larissa and Beckham and Brady. He will also be sadly missed by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins especially Robert, Wendy, Scott and Carol, as well as numerous friends and co-workers. For the last 18 years, Steve worked for Univar Canada. He started as a Sales Rep and worked his way up to Sales Manager and then to Resident Manager. Steve was a natural born salesperson who found his dream job. He took pride in managing all aspects of the Univar Winnipeg location with ease and had great success building an awesome team of people whom he loved and respected. As a child, Steve played hockey, baseball and was always busy in numerous activities. He experienced living in almost every province from Nova Scotia to BC and travelled to Amsterdam and all over the United States. Steve's intelligence and approach to people with humour and kindness made him a great friend to those who knew him. He was a very giving soul who always made time to make sure you were taken care of. Steve prided himself as an awesome father to Ben, Chris and Kelsie. He was actively involved in getting them into activities they loved and enjoyed watching them. Steve was a big fan of NHL Hockey, NFL Football, Major League Baseball and golfed when he had a chance. His favourite place to visit was at his parents in Las Vegas. Our grateful thanks to family and friends for their prayers and support during this sad time with a special thanks to Debbie Medeiros, Harv Basler, Nelson Medeiros, Ron and Debbie Byron and Curtis Penner for their extra love and support through this journey. A special thanks to Candace Swick at Bee Wellness, Allison Baird at Speechworks and the CancerCare team: Dr. Bashir, Dr. Kakumanu, nurse Kim Paradoski, Dr. Harlos, nurse Denise and to Steve's first Neurosurgeon Dr. Owen Williams, who successfully allowed Steve over a year of quality life. A very special thanks to St. Boniface Hospital for allowing Steve to leave this world with dignity and for the Angel "Charlotte McLennan" who came and sang Amazing Grace after he passed. Steve was a strong and courageous man whose stubbornness helped him to fight hard, but came to peace minutes before he lost a hard battle. If the pain felt after one's passing is any measure of how great that person was, then Steve Schaffer was one of the greatest men alive. He will be missed by all. Greetings of condolences will be offered to the family at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. Winnipeg, Manitoba at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018, Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 11:00 a.m. from Rev. Father Sam Argenziano presiding. Pallbearers will be Ryan Schaffer, Chris Scott, Nelson Medeiros, Cameron Brown, Ron Byron, Harv Basler and Curtis Penner. My deepest condolences to Maureen, Ben and family. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Steve's passing, I had not seen Steve in a while. Steve was an important part of my life and though we drifted along different paths, I have thought of him often. I first met Steve in high school, two kids from Ontario that connected over our joint love of the Leafs, Bruce Springsteen and our competitive nature be it playing ping pong, chess, road hockey (all while we should have been in classes). I have many many great memories of Steve and will treasure them always. Although his time was short, his impact on the lives around him was immeasurable. Rest in Peace my friend. - Posted by: C.Gibson (Friend) on: Feb 06, 2018

I want to wish Steve's family my sincerest condolences as we have truly lost one of the great ones. I take solace in having the opportunity to work for and get to know Steve. I will ever be eternally grateful for Steve giving me the opportunity to work and the patience to stick with me and be my supporter. He was genuine in his actions, could also take and hand out jokes, and he was someone you truly wanted to be around due to bright outlook on life. He loved his family, and he loved his work family, and still loved and care for those who had left to pursue other ventures. Thank you for being a part of my life Steve Schaffer, thank you for being a mentor in life and work, thank you for giving me a chance; I am forever grateful and you will be missed by me and by many. - Posted by: Marc Martin (Work Colleague) on: Feb 05, 2018

I have so many memories growing up in Port Colborne, when as children Steve and I were nearly inseparable, always messy and muddy, and pretty good at finding ways to drive Aunt Elaine or my Mom crazy. What a great cousin and friend he was to me. When he moved away we drifted apart, but I thought of him often, and always hoped to reconnect some day. From reading about his life and the impact he had on others, I see that he continued to be the same wonderful person I knew. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and although I've never had the opportunity to meet you Maureen and Ben, you are in my thoughts at this very difficult time. Aunt Elaine, Uncle Rick, Ryan and family, I'm very much thinking of you too. I hope you all are able to find strength to get through this and hope you can take some peace from the memories Steve's left you. As close friends of Richard and Elaine--we have suffered with them over this past year. Stephen was the best of of what a quality family like the Schaffers bring into this world. We will be here forever to wrap our arms around the family. To move forward now is the most difficult task--but it is what Stephen would have wanted. My deepest sympathies to Steve’s entire family. I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Steve in Winnipeg. He was a great leader and kind person and I know I speak for everyone how knew Steve that he will be deeply missed...I will miss him a lot. I don’t know if I will ever meet someone as knowledgeable and passionate on American Fast Food Restaurant history. I remember the time when Steve and I made a business trip to the US and he was so excited to introduce me to “Jimmy John’s”. He talked about it for about two weeks before we went. It was so good. Thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Miss you already Steve Marc Caissie - Posted by: Marc Caissie (Work colleague) on: Feb 03, 2018

Lorraine and I were both shocked to hear of Steve's passing. Our thoughts go out to you, his family and all the friends that knew one of the nicest, quality people they will ever know. Steve was one of those rare souls that immediately made you feel comfortable whenever you were near him. His engaging laughter was infectious and genuine and we will never forget how warm we felt in his company. The last time we saw Steve was when he dropped over for a visit in the Fall. Reflecting back on that visit now, Lorraine and I feel incredibly grateful to have had a few laughs and warm conversation. Thank-you for enriching our life Steve Schaffer. - Posted by: Garth and Lorraine Meacham (Friend/coworker) on: Feb 03, 2018
