HELEN MATHEWS August 28, 1928 February 21, 2018 Helen Mathews, aged 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 21, 2018. She will be sadly missed by her son Jeff and grandson Johnny, as well as by her nieces, nephews and friends. She will be lovingly remembered for her kind heart, and her love of people and all of the animals on God's Earth. Helen was predeceased by her father Sam, mother Martha, her brother Oscar and her sister Adele. Helen grew up on the farm and often spoke of a gentler time. She was married in Miami Beach, Florida, and returned to Winnipeg to be closer to her family. Helen was a hotel owner and stayed in the restaurant business as a waitress at Sir John's & the Tipsy Bull in Polo Park, and at Rae & Jerry's until the day she retired, which was the moment news broke that she was a grandma. She was affectionately known as 'Oma' from that moment on. Oma was a legion member and enjoyed her retirement doing all the things she loved, firstly by spending as much time with Johnny and family as she could. She especially loved spending summers at the lake in Matlock. Going for car rides, walking on the beach, and sitting on the swing, reading a mystery novel were all things you saw Oma routinely doing. She loved having dogs in the home: two Stormys, her beloved German Shepards and Brandi. A day couldn't start or end without her cup of tea. As per Helen's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private interment will take place at a later date. Special thanks to the caring staff of the Luther Home.
