ELAINE MURIEL ROUS (nee MITCHELL) Suddenly on Monday, February 26, 2018, Elaine passed away at her residence. Mom is survived by her daughter Michele O'Dowd (Allan); sons Cal (Charlotte), Jeffrey (Monica) and stepson, Bert (Laurie). As well she is survived by her grandchildren: Christopher, Eric, Kyle, Korey, Kelsea, Andrea, Kevin, Lindsay, Shannon and kitty cat Hailey, as well as numerous extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents, sister and two brothers. Elaine was born in Winnipeg and spent her early years in Norwood Flats before moving to Beresford Avenue. Mom went to school at Lord Roberts and Kelvin High School. As a young girl, she liked to play softball and was proud of winning the championship with her Lord Roberts team. As a young woman, Mom worked in the office at B.A. Oil. While there, she became a member of the ALPHA IOTA Business Sorority. In the fall of 1963, Mom met a good-looking, single father of two boys, named Herbert. After a short courtship, the two got married. In May of 1965, on her own birthday, she welcomed a daughter, Michele, to the family. Two years later they completed their family when Cal was born. Mom enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother. The family lived on McGill Avenue in Fort Richmond where Mom remained for over 40 years enjoying fabulous friendships with a great bunch of neighbours. Mom became very involved in the Richmond Kings Community Club, where she looked after Baton, and for many years, helped Dad run the weekly Bingo and mixed curling league. Mom also loved bowling in the Elm Park Ladies Bowling League where she bowled every Tuesday for over 25 years. Mom was very creative and loved sewing and doing crafts. She was well-known for her Barbie beds and stove towels and spent many weekends working craft sales with Michele. In May 2013, Mom suffered a brain tumour that took away her independence; however, she made a miraculous recovery and moved to the Seine River Retirement Home where she made many new friends. She loved going out to Club Regent and for dinner at Bellamy's and Applebee's. She was very proud of her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Seine River Seniors Residence, the home care nurses, especially Mary Evette and Michelle who were both very special to her, as well as the EMTs, doctors and nurses at St. Boniface Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to her favourite cause, the Winnipeg Humane Society. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. E.J. COUTU & CO. I grew up in the house right across from the Rous family on McGill and have fond memories of "Mrs. Rous" and the family. In my adult years it was always great to have a quick visit with Mrs. Rous and Michele at craft shows or seeing Cal and his family at a hockey rink. I am passing along my sincere condolences to the whole family. It is such a sad time when we lose our mother. Regrettably I will be out of town and I am not able to attend the memorial service but please know you will all be in my thoughts as I very much appreciated your support when my mother passed. - Posted by: Michelle (Fraser) Allard (McGill Neighbor) on: Mar 06, 2018
