DALE MAGNUS We announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, brother, and papa, Dale Magnus, on March 14, 2018. He will be remembered always, and greatly missed by his loving wife and best friend Lorraine; his sons, Brett (Lynette) and Blair (Wendy), and daughter Michelle, along with his six adoring grandchildren, Cole, Kai, Reid, Peter, Merrik and Ann. His grandchildren brought great joy to his life. He was very proud of each of them and they were fortunate to have spent such quality time with their Papa. He will also be missed by his brother Dean (Sandy), niece Deanne (Brant), nephews Derek and Dylan and sister-in-law Arleen (Ray), nephew Kyle (Miriam) and niece Kristin (Matt), along with several cousins and many great friends. Dale grew up in a loving family with his parents, Lorene and Herman Magnus, and younger brother Dean. From a young age, Dale would help his father, Herman (a self-taught home-builder), construct homes in south Winnipeg, enjoying many years of family happiness. Dale always lived in a home or cottage that he and his father built together. In 1965, Dale obtained his Chartered Accountant designation and, based on academic and athletic achievements, received the Outstanding Graduate award as selected by his peers. This was the beginning of the CA legacy in the Magnus family. In the early 1970s, Dale and his partner Howard Buffie founded Magnus & Buffie Chartered Accountants. Their partnership spanned over 30 years and the mutual respect they had for each other was the foundation of their successful accounting practice and enduring friendship. In the later years, Dale also was proud to work with Brett and Blair when they both joined the practice. Dale had a love for sport and was a diverse athlete. In his early days, he curled at the Granite with his father and uncle Lloyd Magnus and was part of the team that set a club record for the longest winning streak. He played competitive football and hockey, and golfed at Southwood with his father. There were epic family tennis matches at the Zig Zig Yacht Club with Dean, Brett, Blair and their friends, with the old boys usually ending up victorious. In more recent years, he enjoyed golfing at Beauty Bay with a group of close friends he referred to as "the three Jims and a Dale". Dad would say that the best thing that ever happened to him was meeting the love of his life at a Clear Lake dance. He and Lorraine married in 1963 and shared over 50 beautiful years together. They were truly each other's source of strength and happiness. Although discrete and modest in his admiration for our mom, there was never any doubt that in our dad's opinion, Mom was an incomparably perfect mother and life companion. Our cottage on Sungam Siding at Lake of the Woods, was Dad's favourite spot. He and Mom spent every summer and many winter weekends there, appreciating its beauty and creating lasting memories for our family. There were many boat trips, family projects, drinks on the dock, snowmobile rides and good times with family and cherished friends, including the "New Year's Gang". Many parties took place at the May cottage in Minaki, where Dale loved to dance with Lorraine, his "Party Doll". Games and competition were an on-going tradition. Whether it be setting a new record for the number of dock-to-dock football throws, ping-pong tournaments, card games, or calling "dirty fink" contests to see who would be shamed by being the last one in the lake, Dad always enjoyed himself. The exuberance he displayed in his victories made us all the more determined to beat him. Dad's values were clear and straight forward: integrity, hard work, respect for others and commitment to family. These were exemplified in his life through the building of his lake cabins, family home and business, and in the enduring lifelong friendships that he treasured. It is as important to us to live up to these values as it was for our dad to live by them. We continue to do our best to instill these values in his grandchildren. Our dad was always there for us, with his wisdom and gentle guidance to life's many challenges. He was a caring and gentle soul who was fiercely protective of his family and always made us feel safe and loved. He is, and always will be, missed. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Qualico Family Centre in Assiniboine Park, at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 9, 2018. Reception to follow. If you so choose, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dale's memory to a charity of one's choice.
