THOMAS GEORGE HAGUE 1946 - 2018 Tom passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2018. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his daughter Tyler, son-in-law Matthew Lynch, grandchildren, Esmay and Theodora Lynch, his brother Ab Hague, sister-in-law Wendy Hague, nephews, Jesse (Elizabeth Peters) and Adam Hague (Sarah, Owen and Oliver) as well as his brother John Hague. Tom grew up in Winnipeg. The Hague family was very fortunate to spend wonderful summers boating, waterskiing and partying at their cottage at Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell. At Easter break, the family took car trips to the southern US and Mexico. Tom's lifelong love for adventure travel was born from those trips. After completing his Arts degree at the University of Manitoba, Tom enrolled in Law and received his call to the Bar in 1974. Before beginning his practice of law he and Barbara decided to take a year to travel. They spent an amazing year travelling throughout Australia and New Zealand, living in their little tent and getting about in a 15 year old Morris Minor. With that itch out of his system, Tom and Barbara returned to Winnipeg in 1975. Tom started his law practice in Morris, Manitoba with the law firm of Braun and Schmidt. By 1976, Tom had a baby daughter, Tyler Kate and the daily travel to Morris became difficult. He switched his focus and joined the Civil Legal Department with the Government of Manitoba Department of Justice. He soon became the Director of the department, a job he held until he retired. He had wonderful colleagues in Manitoba Justice and really enjoyed his work. Tom was a man of many interests and adventure travel was a big one. He spent hours learning about new countries and planning fabulous family trips to Europe and Asia. Several months after the Tiananmen Square uprising in China, Tom and Tyler had a special father/daughter experience, spending three weeks travelling around the country with a bus of school teachers. They lived the history as it was happening. A few years later, Tom was selected to represent Manitoba on a special course with the Canadian Military. The family moved to Kingston, Ontario for a year while Tom studied and travelled with senior military officers, government officials and business executives around the world. By 2013, when he made his last big trip, he has visited a total of 57 countries throughout his lifetime. Keeping fit was important to Tom and it was a rare day he didn't walk, run or bike to work or workout with his friends. Over his lifetime, he played squash, curled, ran marathons, rowed at the Winnipeg Rowing Club and later found a love for yoga. Tom's generosity and kindness, sense of humour, and professional skills made him a popular board member for many community organizations. For many years, he chaired the Meals on Wheels Board in Winnipeg and volunteered his time with the Alliance Francaise, Canadians Helping Kids in Vietnam and the Manitoba Printmakers. In 2008, Tom was diagnosed with dementia. Throughout this terrible journey, he maintained his dignity and graciousness. He was helped through this difficult experience by his wife and best friend Barb, his brother Ab, his friends, his care workers, Olga and Cheryl and lastly the wonderful staff at Pembina Place Personal Care Home. A special thank you to Anne Thiessen who helped him every day. A joy in his later life was interacting with his beloved granddaughters, Esmay and Theodora. Esmay often remarked that her grandfather was "always laughing". A celebration of Tom's life will be held on from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2018 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Church). In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Recreation Program, Pembina Place through the Bethania Mennonite Memorial Foundation. INTEGRITY Cremation & Funeral Planning 204-295-5408

  • Sincere condolences Barb. My prayers are with you. - Posted by: Louise Plamondon (friend) on: May 03, 2018

  • Ladislav and I were so saddened to learn of Tom's passing. I had the privilege of meeting Tom through his wife Barbara, my long time friend at the rowing club. Their warm, funny, and easy demeanor together as a couple and apart as individuals made a lasting impression. Tom always to my eyes exhibited a quiet strength and he just radiated accomplishment - but you could miss that if you weren't paying attention because of his humility. Once, shortly after we adopted a rescue greyhound, we needed to be out of town overnight for a couple of days. Barb and Tom offered to take our newly adopted and rather skittish rescue, and care for her. Sunshine was learning how to be a 'pet', and how to do normal doggie things....but she wasn't quite there yet. I was so worried that it would be a burden, but they insisted. In the end, I learned it was Tom's diligence and loving care - quiet, steady, and persistent - even in the pouring rain that weekend - that helped our girl learn confidence as a newly retired racing dog and find out how much fun it could be just being a regular dog, much loved. I had the pleasure of experiencing Tom's kindness in other ways, other times over the years. My thoughts are with you all. Safe travels Tom. - Posted by: Kirsten Ryan and Ladislav Tomes (Friends) on: Apr 20, 2018

  • Well my old friend, on to your next big journey. Our Family have been friends to the Haques for over 40 years. Tom and Barb always made us feel special. Even when we moved to Vancouver from Winnipeg in 1991, we kept them in our hearts. On my many business trips to Winnipeg I would always stay with them, sleeping by the furnace in the basement, safe and warm. His last years took him too soon from us all. All our love to Barb and Tyler and Family, from Ken,Joan,David, Jason and Lisa. - Posted by: Ken & Joan Boyce and family (Life long friends) on: Apr 09, 2018

  • Tom was my legal advisor on some files that required some intergovernmental negotiations. On one occasion we had a meeting in Toronto that warranted both of our participation. Tom and I caught an early morning flight out of Winnipeg, landing in Toronto about 10:00AM for a 1:00PM meeting. We took a cab to the office, near Forest Hill, dropped off our briefcases, and headed out to explore that beautiful area in Toronto. We visited some antique and speciality shops and had a great lunch at a local deli, before heading to our meeting. It felt like a vacation. After a short, but successful meeting, we caught our flight home and were back in Winnipeg in time for supper with our respective families. I will always remember that day as a highlight. As a legal advisor, Tom was consistently knowledgeable and well prepared, and tempered his expert advice with grace and understanding, always looking for the best answer to whatever issue we were addressing. Tom was the consummate professional; it was a privilege to have had opportunity to work with him. - Posted by: Richard (Dick) Stephens (Manitoba Government colleague/client (Environment Department)) on: Apr 03, 2018
