LARRY ALAN CURTAIN It is with intense sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Curtain at his residence with his bride at his side. Larry succumbed to the devastating pancreatic cancer that robbed of us of him. Left to mourn his passing is his loving wife Kathy, his two children, daughter Tracy (Jason) and his son Kevin (Jenn), as well as his grandchildren, Cole, Adley and Claire. Also left behind are his two siblings and their loved ones. Larry was predeceased by his parents, Alan and Jean, and his sister Carol. If you recognize the name on this obituary, you were either a good guy or a bandit, because those were the only categories that Larry could identify with. You may have played a sport with him or against him, or, you knew him while working with him. As a young man Larry was employed by the City of Winnipeg. He spent three years with the Fort Garry Parks and Recreation Department, he then joined the Winnipeg Police Services. Larry was very fortunate to have made a great number of friends through his pursuits, namely sports and employment. There were many laughs, beers and stories shared recalling hockey and baseball successes and failures. Larry was proud to have been a member of the Winnipeg Police Services for 26 years. Whenever in the company of police colleagues both active and retired, tales of bandits and the capers they were involved in often came up. Larry often said, "Police don't get paid to lose a fight, there's just too much at stake." Larry truly loved the outdoors and nature, this is best exemplified by the locations where he chose to spend the majority of his time, his country property south-east of Winnipeg and his cottage on the shores of Lake Manitoba. Both of these locations afforded Larry the opportunity to be surrounded by fresh air, quietness and nature simply by opening his front door. In his retirement years Larry and Kathy enjoyed winter get-aways most notably to Punta Cana and South Padre Island, Texas. They had planned on becoming Winter Texans, but no time. Larry was intensely proud of his two fiercely independent children, Tracy and Kevin. He brimmed with pride with their successes in life and the fine adults they have become. Larry would like to thank all the medical personnel he encountered along this nasty path, he felt more compassionate people would be hard to find, most notably Dr. R Hayward. As per Larry's wishes, cremation has taken place, there will be no formal service. Rest in Peace #1179, Who's got the eye?

I am so sorry that I did not have a closer relationship to my cousin Larry. Our cousin Tom told me about Larry's passing just last week. I am sad to not have known better since we were kids. Debbie Durnin (Debora Durnin-Richards) - Posted by: Debora Durnin (Cousin) on: Dec 10, 2018

Kathy and family. I am so very sorry and shocked for the devastating loss of Larry. When I saw his picture in the paper on Saturday, I was absolutely stunned and shocked. When the shock wore off, a smile came to my face as I started to think of all the great times and memories I had of Larry when I was growing up in Fort Garry. I lived on Rosemont Ave just behind Larry’s childhood home and it was like a second home to me. Although we never went to school together because of city division lines,we played hockey together at Victoria Community Club with so many friends who have also posted Condolences here. When summer rolled around we could be found playing pickup baseball and football games with all the kids in the neighbourhood out in the field on Parker Ave where the Rapid Transit is going thru. When I was 13 my family moved to Charleswood and I remember every weekend bicycling back to Larry’s house so we could play all those great pickup games which were usually organized by Larry. As time went on, I started playing hockey at Robin Park and I always looked forward to my buddy Larry when we played Victoria. After hockey was over with, I used to run into Larry when we played Fastball against each other at various weekend tournaments all over rural Manitoba.Larry was one of the best around athletes, I think ever knew. Man was he competitive!! As the years went by, we kind of lost touch but I often thought of him and wondered how he was and what he was up to. Once again my deepest condolences. Rest In Peace Larry. - Posted by: Ross Marsch (Childhood friend ) on: Apr 11, 2018

Kathy, Kevin and Tracy, I am very saddened to hear of Larry's sudden passing ..Gone too soon. Shocked and sad to hear of Curts' passing. To say he is gone too soon is an understatement. Best and toughest teammate a guy could have. Playing with him from age 5 at Victoria C.C. to our two years with the Monarchs were some of the best years of my life. We shared a lot of great stories! I hope that Kath and family can find comfort in each other and with all the memories from the huge list of people that Curts touched. - Ray Dudar - Posted by: Ray Dudar (friend\former teammate) on: Apr 04, 2018

My thoughts are with Larry's family. We shared some space and time on 'the job'. I have huge respect for Larry. He was always eager, positive and wanting to make a difference. Fun to be around, both on and off the clock. I am saddened by his loss and my heart goes out to his family. - Posted by: Dan Bergen (Co-Worker) on: Apr 04, 2018

I was god smacked when I learned of Larry's passing, like many I had no idea he was ill. I first met Larry many years ago, when I was a rookie cop in district 6 and later in my career, when we met up again in WPIU . He was one of those guys you wanted to emulate, great cop, fair , tough , respected by his friends and colleagues , even the "Bad guys". Larry never forgot a bad guy or address where he lived. My sincere condolences to his wife and family and all his brothers and sisters in Blue. Rest in Peace brother. - Posted by: Rick Pearson ((friend/co-worker)) on: Apr 04, 2018

On behalf of my parents, wife, and self I wish to extend our deepest condolences to you and your family Kath. I remember when I coached Larry at Victoria CC and the Monarchs coaches came to me to ask about Larry’s character. I told them it was even greater than his hockey ability. Truly one of a kind. - Posted by: Warren barker (Friend) on: Apr 04, 2018

KATHY,TRACY,AND KEVIN, I am so sorry for your loss. Larry was a friend of mine since Parker Ave. We have been through so much as kids teenagers and adults. We both quit the railway and drove to California in his van where we both ended up in San Matio hospital. We played ball together from kids to adults(tom's transmission) lots of beer gardens, wrestling and eye gouging with Lanny and Pierce. I have too many stories to tell of Curtz, a life time. Larry last called me on my 60TH birthday and said it was a milestone. I loved that guy! Rest in peace Curtz, I'll miss our Christmas calls. your friend RICK THOMAS - Posted by: RICK THOMAS (FRIEND) on: Apr 03, 2018

Kathy, my heart goes out to you. You had always said that Larry’s life span was short and for your sake I hoped you were wrong. Never got the chance to meet Larry but you two raised great kids and most importantly stuck together through thick and thin. Please, let’s reconnect, nows not the time to be alone. My email hasn’t changed and neither has my phone number. Both were submitted with this. If there is anything I can do please let me know Sharon - Posted by: Sharon Irwin (Friend) on: Apr 01, 2018

Our condolences to the family. I knew and worked around Larry for at least 20 years. He was an awesome police officer, and a Stand Up Guy. He will be missed by all. I had the opportunity of being at social functions with him and sharing of stories with him with alot of laughter. He worked hard and loved being a Police Officer. Dear Kathy and family I was deeply shocked & saddened to learn of Larry's passing. We were partners for a number of years in the north end and crime division. We became instant friends on the job and went through many things together. He was an outstanding young detective and someone who could always be relied on. Larry was a great example to young officers as a supervisor. He loved his family deeply and spoke of them often with great pride. I will always hold my memories of Larry close to my heart and smile thinking of his infectious laugh. God Bless.....Steve Jones - Posted by: Steve Jones (Friend/partner) on: Mar 31, 2018

I’ve known Larry for as long as I can remember. We grew up together and spent almost every spare minute playing hockey together at Victoria Community Club. I always secretly looked up to Larry. He was “rough and tumble “ but alway had a kind word for me. As often happens we lost touch. I think of him from time to time and had hoped that I might run in to him again just to say hello. Maybe another time my friend. - Posted by: Wes Brisson (Friend ) on: Mar 31, 2018

I had been in Canada but a few years when I was sent to Larry/s shift in the the North end.He was one of the kindest Sgt's that I ever worked for. Always willing to help. advise and with a laid back style, nothing much phased him and it is with profound sadness that I learn of his passing. I last saw him when he was filling up at the Anola gas station. We talked of his family of which he was very proud. In true Larry style he never mentioned anything was wrong. My sincere condolences to his family - Posted by: Brian Bear (Co-worker/ friend) on: Mar 31, 2018

What sad day and a huge loss when Larry passed. I first met Larry many years ago when I joined the police department. Larry was the kind of guy when you met him, you immediately liked him. He was polite, funny, personable and always had a smile on his face. A genuine good guy !!! - Posted by: Dave Lysyk (Friend / coworker ) on: Mar 31, 2018

Very shocked and saddened to hear of Larry's passing. I had no idea he was ill. My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Kathy and the family on the loss of such a fine husband, father and grandfather. Larry was a wonderful man and a dedicated police officer. It was a honour and privilege getting to know and working with Larry when we worked in uniform in the North End and then in the Detective Branch as well. Sadly, we saw little of each other for a good number of years as career paths went separate ways but I will always fondly remember the times on and off the job spent with Larry and Kathy. I can still remember his grin and the way he laughed, and made me laugh, when we shared a funny experience or tall tale. The world needs more Larry Curtains. I am just gutted at his passing. - Posted by: Bob Russell (Friend and colleague from WPS) on: Mar 31, 2018

I was very sad to hear about Larry. He was a true mentor to me on the job and a true friend off the job. We shared many "pepsi's" together whether it was at the lake or in the city, telling war stories and talking about Fort Garry. Great guy gone way too soon. I will miss our talks, even though they didn't happen often enough. Rest in peace Curts and God speed. - Posted by: Kevin Smith (Smitty) (Friend/co-worker) on: Mar 31, 2018
