DONG HEE SHIN On Saturday, May 5, 2018, Dong Hee Shin passed peacefully in her sleep, with her family lovingly by her side. Her final breath was drawn at 12:02 p.m., at Parkview Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. We would like to extend our gratitude to all of the staff and residents at Parkview Place for making her stay there comfortable, and for their attentive care. Born on March 14, 1923, in Chungnam, South Korea, Dong Hee's parents immigrated to Osaka, Japan, when she was just two years old. She spent her childhood there, learning the customs and culture of the Japanese people. It was there where she met Sukki Yoon, her future husband. They fell in love and were wed in South Korea in 1944 where they eventually moved and had three children: Hee Suk Yoon, Suk Ja Yoon and Hae Suk Yoon. Their marriage was short lived, and Dong Hee was widowed at age 27, as Sukki Yoon died in action in 1949 fighting the communist guerrilla groups in South Korea prior to the onset of the Korean War. Dong Hee never re-married, as she devoted her time to her family and to her career. Dong Hee went on to serve in the 1st Division Women's Police Force in Chungnam, South Korea for the following 25 years. Primarily working in social services, Dong Hee spent much of her career helping orphaned children and youth. In 2005, Dong Hee received the presidential citation for participating in the Korean war. She was also recognized and awarded with the Medal of National Heroes in 2016 for her involvement with the Korean war. After retiring, Dong Hee immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1979 to look after her soon to be grandchild. Dong Hee enjoyed cooking, taking walks, taking care of family, worship and community service, as well as spending time with her friends from the Japanese Alliance Church in Winnipeg. Fiercely strong and independent, she lived out the remainder of her life looking out for those around her. Dong Hee is survived by: Her oldest son and family: Hee Suk Yoon (Erimi Park), Anna Yoon (Danny Choi), Vince Hyunbin Yoon (Bomi Kim), Lindsay, Joshua, Roy and Jaden. Her daughter and family: Suk Ja Yoon (Byung Hee Yoo), Eun Shin Yoo (Jae Hyung Bae), Eun Min Yoo (Sung Won Kim), Eun Kyung Yoo (Sung Hyuk Park), Jae Hoon Yoo (Sun Ju Yang), Yu Kyung, Yu Bin, Chan Young, Ye Jin, So Yun, Jin Ho and Seung Ho. Her youngest son and family: Hae Suk Yoon (Bokhi Yi), Jenny Yoon (Davin MacRae), Nina Yoon (Keochay Thongsakhom), Kaelyn, Kaiya and Niko. The funeral service will be held at the Manitoba Korean Presbyterian Church at 621 Oxford Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Thursday, May 10 at 5:00 p.m.
