DR. GARTH EDWARD JOHNSON April 23, 1942 - May 8, 2018 With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Garth Edward Johnson, 76 years young, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. Dad was born on April 23, 1942, in Selkirk, Manitoba, beloved son and youngest child of Dr. Edward and Eleanor (Emes) Johnson, and brother of Arlene and Cynthia. He attended Winnipeg's St. Paul's High School and graduated from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1966. He found his calling in Orthopedics and pursued training in England, after which he returned to Canada to take a staff position at the University of Manitoba, Section of Orthopedics in 1972, then moved to the University of Ottawa, and the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1992, where he served until his retirement in 2014. Dad was gifted with a kind heart and unparalleled clinical ability. While he excelled in Orthopedic trauma and spine surgery, his greatest gift was as a teacher and mentor to many students and physicians over his long career. Dad is survived by his wife Pat (Southgate) Johnson; children, Michael (Marisa), Meredith Mae (Yves), Gareth (Brittany) and Stephanie (Danny); stepsons, Neil (Marie) Richardson and Colin (Robin) Richardson; first wife, Wendy MacDonald; sister Cynthia Webster and nephew Paul Johnson. Grandpa Garth was deeply treasured by his grandchildren: Evan, Nicholas, Julia, Daniel, Clara, Gigi, Hunter, Tristan, Jackson, Keenan, Sophie, Noah, Matthew, William and Thomas. Dad was predeceased by his parents and sister Arlene. We are grateful for the exceptional care that Dad received from Dr. Sinclair, Dr. Hooper, Dr. Kubelik, Dr. Rubens and Dr. Dickie, and the skilled and compassionate Civic Hospital ICU nursing team. In lieu of flowers, our family requests donations to Dad's favourite causes, Amnesty International or the Shepherd's of Good Hope. A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Holy Cross Parish, 685 Walkley Road, Ottawa. No matter the weather, Dad always said "it's a glorious day". Accordingly, a Celebration of Life will be held at Lago Bar and Grill, Dow's Lake Pavilion, 1001 Queen Elizabeth Drive, Ottawa, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We respectfully request no mourning attire, in honour of Dad's love of life and colour. Another celebration will be held in Winnipeg in the fall. In the words of the hymn that Dad chose for his mother's funeral, ours is a 'Love that Will Not Let Me Go'.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Garth's untimely death has been a tragedy that leaves all with a sense of personal loss. Garth for me was a personal professional light post. He was my true mentor when I was a resident. He was always a friend. In Ottawa he became a colleague, running and biking partner, and was always part of our lives. He was a highly skilled surgeon, a teacher par excellence, whose rigid discipline and intellectual clarity was an example to a generation of residents in Winnipeg and Ottawa. This was his true professional legacy. In clear retrospect, I wish that I had seen him more. In reality I saw him most years, especially in association with the COA meeting. We would discuss professional issues, work out, and simply keep in touch. These always special moments, now altered in my sensorium with his absence from this earth. We offer Pat, his children and grandchildren our condolences for his loss. • One of my very favorite surgeons to work with. I worked in the adult OR at HsC with him from 1982 till he left the orthopaedic department. He had a great sense of Humor. He was really talented and was very congenial. He worked as one of us as an ORT in his early years so he understood the job that we did as well. I got to see him when he came back for MOS meetings as a speaker. His son is a real reminder to me as I work with Mike still to this day. They are very similar and I know his dad had a huge influence on him. A huge loss for all. Will miss such a great human being. My condolences to his whole family but especially to our wonderful Dr Mike Johnson and his family. - Posted by: Tammy Decelles (Friend ) on: May 13, 2018

  • Garth was taken too soon but has left behind a legacy of grateful patients and many talented surgeons that he taught his own immense skills in the field of orthopedic surgery. It was an honour to have known him and enjoyed life with him from medical school, residency and as a an orthopedic colleague. We all benefited from his immense knowledge, practical common sense and his love of life! Sincere condolences to Pat and family.
