LEILA ALVARE Following a courageous and feisty battle with cancer, Leila passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at the age of 70. Leila is survived by her beloved husband Gordon; son Graham; brothers Edwin and Garth Innes (Donna-May); among many family. Leila prized her many fulfilling and long frendships. Her passion was teaching piano to her many students and seeing them develop musically and as people. A final pride was to know Graham would graduate in 2018 a Doctor of Medicine. Leila was lovingly committed to Gordon through 52 years of marriage and recently his Parkinson's affliction. A lifelong lover of the arts, a person letter from Piaf was a valued treasure. Leila will be missed by many. A memorial service is planned for 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 8, at Mennonite University Auditorium, 500 Shaftesbury Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I met Gordon and Leila in 1968 when they were living in a sparsely furnished apartment on Assiniboine Ave. Leila had a remarkable smile that in my experience never failed to warm hearts. She and Gordon were always among the kindest people I know. Theirs was a wonderful marriage and their delight upon the birth of Graham and the pleasure they took in Graham’s progress in life was remarkable. Leila’s courage, tenacity and intelligence became fully apparent during her final years in her care for Gordon in his illness and her determination to overcome her own illness. I know she dearly regretted missing Graham’s graduation but I also know she was very proud of his accomplishments and her belief that he will be a caring and capable doctor. I miss her. - Posted by: Brenda Manchester (Friend) on: Oct 13, 2018

  • I am so sad that Leila has passed away. I have known her for 50 years and have travelled many roads with she and Gordon. I am grateful for their introducing me to my late wife Jo-Anne, for which I am eternally grateful, and their acceptance of my second wife, Catherine. We shared many interests and viewpoints of life, including her interest in current events, and when I last saw her two days before passing she still had CNN on while in the hospital. She was very analytical and always aware of trends, problems and issues in life, and delighted in discussing them, and the world will miss her views. We shared many stories and ideas, as did Gordon. I know that she was devoted to Graham and Gordon and her students and they all benefited from her insights. She will be forever missed. - Posted by: Bruce Hutchison (Friend) on: Jun 08, 2018

  • What can I say about Leila? We met when we were both six years old. We instantly became best friends, and remained friends throughout our lives. Through all of life’s milestones, through all the challenges we both faced, no matter how far away from each other we were, we kept in touch. I was pleased to be her maid of honour, and she was my matron of honour. We both celebrated the joys of our children’s births, and the events we shared together; Christmases, New Years, Halloweens, and all the other events that make up a life. Leila’s friendship has been with me for over sixty years. She is irreplaceable in my life, and I know I will never forget her. May she rest in peace. • Leila will always hold a special place in our hearts and memories. We were so saddened to hear of her passing. She was a one of a kind teacher who was each student’s cheerleader and followed her students’ lives and career paths with great pride. We will forever be grateful to her for the immense role she played in our son’s life. Our deepest condolences to Gordon, Graham, and the rest of the family. - Posted by: Sharon Goszer Tritt & Steven Tritt (Parents of a former student of Leila’s ) on: Jun 05, 2018

  • What a lovely photo of Leila. It's just how I remember her. I taught Music for Young Children with her many years ago. I remember her gentle nature and ever positive outlook. It was my privilege to know her. - Posted by: Linda Rodgers (Shellrude) (friend) on: Jun 05, 2018
