ROY FRANCIS BOLIN March 5, 1931 - June 6, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family of Roy Francis Bolin announces his passing on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at the age of 87, after suffering a heart attack. Roy will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jennifer (Murray), Grant (Cathie), both of Winnipeg, and Christopher (Marnie) and their two children, Isla and Neve, all of Calgary. Roy will also be forever remembered by his sisters, Shelagh and Shirley and his younger brother Gerry (Bernie). Roy was predeceased by his former wife and mother of their children, Sandra MacKenzie; and his siblings, Al, Lou, Eileen and Lucille. Roy was born on March 5, 1931 in Winnipeg where he spent his life raising a family and working in various roles in finance, marketing and advertising. He was a devoted father who always put his children first. Roy shared a love of golf and baseball and telling stories of his younger days over a coffee at his local McDonalds. His most told tale was about receiving an autographed baseball from the 1961 New York Yankee's roster, while he took in spring training in Florida earlier that year. Despite facing many health challenges throughout his adult life, Roy had an ever-joyful spirit and energy for his family, friends and work. He was deeply connected to his church, Saint John Brebeuf Parish, and his community, River Heights. He lived independently until his passing. Endless care and compassion was given, especially during his later years, by his loving daughter Jennifer. Roy was adored by his two sons and their families who were also devoted to his well-being and strong advocates for his independence. We wish to thank the staff of the Health Sciences Centre for their thoughtful and kind care of our father. Roy fought and won seven bouts with cancer over the course of 35 years. That remarkable feat earned him a special record with the Canadian Cancer Society as the longest living cancer survivor in Canadian history. Roy also played an important part of our nation's legacy. He helped organize the Manitoba portion of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope in 1980. Terry Fox's initial campaign letter still hangs on Roy's wall. The Funeral Mass in memory of Roy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 11, 2018, at Saint John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Parish, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, Winnipeg, MB, with Father Wayne Morrissey officiating. In lieu of flowers, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, will gratefully accept donations. I met Roy through my husband's family, but years later we developed a different relationship through business. Often he would drop by the office and we would spend hours together talking about history and just life in general. He was always such a good man and I am proud to have called him my friend. Rest in peace Roy, condolences to Jennifer, Grant and Chris and the rest of his extended family. - Posted by: Terri MacKenzie (Friend) on: Jul 09, 2018

It was a shared love for baseball that introduced me to Roy. First as a fan during Roy's junior baseball days with the iconic Rosedale organization; then as a teammate of Roy with St. Boniface Native Sons senior teams .....a distant friend ever since. I was fortunate to also play on baseball teams with Roy's brother Gerry. It has been decades since being with either but I remember both Roy and Gerry as kind, considerate, competitive athletes and good men. My condolences to Gerry and all of the Bolin family. Rest in peace, Roy! - Posted by: John Rendall (fan/teammate/friend) on: Jun 11, 2018

I have fond memories of Roy when he coached Columbus Club in the mid fifties. Apart from being a good coach I recall his faith demonstrated by a quiet sign of the cross on his chest when driving past a Catholic Church. My condolences to Gerry and all his family. He will be in our prayers. Gerry McDonald - Posted by: Gerry Mcdonald (Played ball for Roy in the 1950's.) on: Jun 10, 2018

My sincere condolences and sympathies to Roy's family. He was a wonderful, gentle and soft spoken man and I always enjoyed his visits. I was a customer/client of Roy's for many years and throughout this time came to appreciate what a remarkable individual he truly was. His unbelievable ability to fight and win against numerous battles with cancer always captured my attention as did his stories of Terry Fox. Roy will be greatly missed by his many friends and acquaintances. - Posted by: Dwight MacAulay ( friend) on: Jun 09, 2018
