LAWRENCE RONALD NUYTTEN
Born: Apr 22, 1943
Date of Passing: Jan 26, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAWRENCE RONALD NUYTTEN April 22, 1943 - January 26, 2018 On January 26, our dear brother Lawrence passed away. He was predeceased by his parents, Simon and Lucille; first wife Mona; daughter Patricia; and long time partner Joyce Brisson. He is survived by sister Lorraine (Walter) Kapko and their family of Sherwood Park, AB; brother Bill (Donna) and their family of Oakbank, MB; granddaughter Willow; aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Lawrence grew up in St. Boniface, MB. In his late teens he enlisted in the Navy, but while training in Nova Scotia he was medically discharged. After working at various jobs, he joined the Royal American Shows, travelling extensively throughout Canada and the U.S. He had plenty of stories to tell about his travels with the shows. Later, not one for a 9 to 5 job, he began working for Duffy's Taxi. It was while driving a cab that he met the love of his life, Joyce, who would become his partner for over 20 years. Lawrence was an avid reader, particularly non-fiction. He also claimed that his Playboy magazines had great stories. He also loved doing crossword puzzles, playing bingo, cribbage and, in earlier years, billiards and poker (both which always entailed some sort of friendly wager). While he suffered with declining health in the past few years, it was a broken heart at the loss of his beloved Joyce in March 2017 that took the greatest toll. Last August, Lawrence was able to travel to Edmonton with Bill and Donna to attend their nephew's wedding. He then spent a month there visiting his sister and her family. A trip he thoroughly enjoyed. We would like to give a special thank you to Uncle Reg and Auntie Teri for taking Lawrence to his many medical appointments and to Debbie Brisson for the many meal preps and daily phone calls to Lawrence. It was very much appreciated. Cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. Lay down my dear brother, lay down and take your rest.

Hi Ookie.... When I was barely learning to talk... (I was not even 2 years old)... you kindly, encouragingly offered me $10 the first time I would say your name, 'Uncle Lawrence'. But... brazen as I was.... I happily responded, 'Ookie!'... Again you'd ask me to say your name, and again I'd say 'Ookie!'... ...Even as my vocabulary and speaking increased in the next while, you must have been so eager to finally give me my $10! You'd say to me: 'Tanya say Lawr...' ...and I'd say 'Lawr'... Then you'd say...,'now say rence!' And I'd say 'rence!' Then you'd say...,'now say Lawr-ence!!'... And I'd say 'Oooo-kie!!' Was I holding out for more money?? Was I teasing you, just like you teased everyone else...!? At the age of 2, I imagine I thought you were a jokester and I was just getting you back!!.... I'm so glad that we were able to spend time together, especially when I visited Winnipeg in the last few years, and when you came here to Edmonton to visit us... Playing the never-ending game of BINGO and holding out for your next impending win! You were always a mountain of stories -- heartwarming, outrageous and unbelievable stories. You definitely made an impression on those around you. It still truly feels like you're around, amongst us... even today...Rest in Peace. Your Niece, Tanya - Posted by: Tanya (Niece) on: Jul 01, 2018

Sorry Lise, but I was Lawrence's favorite! LOL Lawrence was one of the kindest people I knew, he would give you the shirt off his back. I will always remember being at the EX in Winnipeg playing colorama when all of a sudden I heard, "and this girl wins this huge bear, YAY", I was maybe 12 or so, it sure made my day! I kept that bear forever. Rest in peace dear cousin, I hope you find some new material and are telling better jokes. Love always xx - Posted by: Barb Horder (cousin) on: Jun 23, 2018

I miss my cousin Lawrence. He always had so many stories to tell. He always told all his cousins, aunts and uncles ... “you're my favorite but don't tell anyone”, so of course we ALL thought we were the favorite. I always had a laugh at that. Years ago he was my taxi driver on more than one occasion and there was never a better taxi driver than him, wish more drivers could be like that. Rest in peace Lawrence. Love always, your favorite cousin, lolol. - Posted by: Lise Hall (Levesque) (Cousin) on: Jun 21, 2018

We are thankful that my Uncle Lawrence was able to come to our wedding in August. When I would go to Winnipeg on business trips I enjoyed visiting, spending time with him and playing cards with him. I will miss his companionship and laughter. Bryan (nephew) and Cassi. - Posted by: Bryan Kapko (Nephew) on: Jun 18, 2018

Lawrence visited us here in Alberta in August for my son Bryan’s wedding. He enjoyed the visits with his niece, nephews, their spouses, and his great-niece and great-nephew. We played cards, went to bingo and visited other friends here. Although we didn’t always agree on things as we were growing up, now we had long talks and I really got to see the better side of him. As his health was failing and found it hard to get around I was thankful that he was able to stay a month. I will cherish the good memories and miss his laughter.
