HERBERT LUDWIG HEIN October 27, 1935 - June 9, 2018 It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Herb, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. His memory will be cherished by his wife and love of his life, Alice; children, Grant (Heather) and Sharon (Glen), grandchildren, Julie, Dustin, Trevor and Taylor, great-grandchildren, Emily and Amelia. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his father Ludwig, mother Johanna and brother George. Dad will be remembered for being an avid hunter and an amazing dancer. He cherished the hunting trips that he took with his father-in-law, his brother George and his son and grandson. He would talk your ear off about this hunt or that hunt if you had the time to listen. When it came to dancing, Mom and Dad would hit the floor particularly if there was a "jive" playing and there was no stopping them. Their passion for dancing is how they met and continued to be a passion for many years. Dad was proud to say that he grew up in Transcona and raised his family between Transcona and Rush Bay on the Lake of the Woods where Mom and Dad had built a four season cabin. Dad always believed that by raising the kids at the lake, they would stay out of trouble. Dad obtained his apprenticeship as a machinist with the Canadian National Railway and retired after 45+ years. Once the "kids" moved out of Transcona, Mom and Dad did also. They lived in their dream homes in East St. Paul and finally settling in Lockport to be closer to their kids and their families. Dad was diagnosed with diabetes in his late 50s and was able to manage the disease until neuropathy took over his hands and feet. The neuropathy was a never-ending frustration for Dad and he could often be heard to say, "If they could only do something to fix my hands." Mom and Dad celebrated their anniversary this past April and as we walked into Dad's room at the Stonewall Hospital on that day, we were greeted by many staff wishing Mom happy anniversary. Apparently the moment Dad opened his eyes that morning he was telling anyone that came into his room that he made it, those were the first words out of his mouth when we entered his room, "well Mom we made it," he had the biggest grin on his face and he couldn't wait to get his hello kiss and a piece of cake. Dad was a proud Mason and Shriner, a longtime member of the Khartum Komedian's. Dad also celebrated a 50-year membership with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 215. Over the last few months Dad's diabetes caused several other health issues that he just couldn't overcome. Dad had been in the hospital since January 16, 2018 and due to health care requirements he was recently moved to Red River Place Extendicare in Selkirk, MB. The family would like to thank the members of Branch 215 for the many visits and treats while Dad was in hospital. We would also like to thank the staff at the Stonewall Health Centre and Red River Place Extendicare for the excellent care, compassion and laughs that you provide for Dad in his final weeks. To quote Dad, "I will be gone a lot longer than I am here." With this thought in mind please, always hug and kiss the ones you love when you part as you never know what tomorrow has in store. To honour Dad's wishes, there won't be a funeral. Cremation and a private family gathering have taken place.
