MABEL SOMERVILLE May 5, 1917 - July 3, 2018 Our world lost a truly unique person when Mabel Somerville passed away peacefully at 101 years of age. Mabel is lovingly remembered by her girls Lynne (Cyril) and Sandra; grandchildren David, Edward and Elizabeth; and great-grandchildren Jackson and Jude. Born and raised on the family farm at Webb, Saskatchewan, Mabel enjoyed playing the piano and loved to sew, knit, quilt, embroider, tat, crotchet and needlework. Mabel married Irvine Somerville in 1945; together they worked very hard farming at Hartney and raising their daughters. Mabel helped to create Hartney 4-H Sewing Club and taught two classes a year for more than 15 years. She was active in Hartney United Church and the Rebekahs. Moving to Winnipeg, Mabel continued to teach needle crafts finally retiring at age 87. She created and led "The Ladies of the Club" at East End Cultural Centre for more than ten years. Mabel looked after hundreds of kids "as a live-in nanny" when their parents went south for warm winter holidays. Mabel created a haven for great family celebrations with delicious meals, music and singalongs. She had a heart of gold and was very kind and generous. She dedicated heself to helping her grandchildren. Her family was the light of her life and she was very proud of all their accomplishments. Mabel loved travelling to Barbados, Cuba, Mexico, Ireland, England, Toronto, the Rockies, Vancouver Island, Yellowknife, Niagara Falls, Arizona and California. Our thanks to the compassionate people who provided care to Mom, especially to Ron Miller for his kindness. At 100, Mabel observed at lunch one day... "Be happy. Take care of yourself. Take time to share your talents with someone. Keep knitting. Have fun. Enjoy." A celebration of Mabel's life will be held at the Unitarian Church, 603 Wellington Crescent on July 21, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. Call 204-930-9202 for more information and condolences.
