BRIAN HAYES With family and friends by his side, we said goodbye to a loved man on August 3, 2018. He fought his battle with cancer as best as he could and with the utmost enthusiasm. Brian is survived by his loving partner Lynn Pascoe of Winnipeg, his sons, Jason Hayes and his wife Dana of Calgary, Alberta and David Hayes and his wife Stacey of Okotoks, Alberta; grandchildren, Alexa, Damon and Lincoln; mother Janet Hayes of Gibsons, BC; sister Lenore Caldwell and her husband Chris of Sechelt, BC; nieces, Shannon, Heather and Teresa and their families, along with many friends that he has accumulated over the years especially his friend of 50 years, Val Nufer. Born in Vancouver, BC August 29, 1947, Brian grew up in a military family living various places in Canada and abroad finally settling in Gimli, Manitoba. He went on to the University of Winnipeg and received a degree in Education and Accounting. Brian started his teaching career in Pilot Mound, but the majority of his career was spent at Springfield Collegiate Institute (Oakbank) and finishing with Murdoch MacKay Collegiate teaching math, business, and accounting. He made many lifelong friends, in particular being one of the three Amigos. He loved teaching and even though tough at times he would not hesitate to spend extra time with students to ensure their success. He also coached several teams in sports and involved himself in various extra-curricular activities, most importantly to him the yearly senior canoe trips into Nopiming Provincial Park. Brian loved the outdoors and sharing those experiences with the people close to him. Portaging, camping, golfing, hiking, skiing and biking. He would often be seen biking around Birds Hill Park with his friend Mac. He often enjoyed listening to tunes while enjoying a scotch and cigar with Uncle Jack.. In high school he excelled in sports as an all-around athlete, but immediately fell in love with European Handball. He would be involved in Handball throughout his life as a player, a coach, a referee, and as an executive on both the Canadian Federation and International Handball community. After retirement, Brian continued to teach part-time and involved himself in advocating his favourite sport including taking part in the Pan-American committee. He loved travelling both with his sport and with Lynn, friends and family. He visited his cherished children, grandchildren and mother often and spent much quality time with his pet dog Charlie. Five years ago, Lynn met Brian who was the love of her life, and soul mate. They continued to travel, camp and enjoy each other's company along with their dog, Charlie until his passing. Lynn stayed by his hospital bed every day. A Celebration of Life will take place on August 19, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. at Silver Heights Restaurant located at 2169 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, family and friends who so desire may make any donation to the Literacy for Life Foundation at www.litforlife.com Condolences can be left at seasonsfunerals.ca

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • My condolences to Jason and David and all Mr. Hayes' family. I loved him as a teacher and as a friend and colleague. I was fortunate to have him as a teacher and a mentor, and later as a colleague. We played Senior Men's basketball together - I loved his competitiveness, and we spent many hours talking about life after games and practices. He loved his boys and wanted nothing but the best for them. I admired the friendship he had with Moosh and Glute, and as students were fortunate to have their influence in our lives. He is missed. - Posted by: Craig Kennedy (Student and friend) on: Jun 01, 2021

  • A favourite teacher from 1975-77 at Springfield Collegiate. So glad that Mr Hayes was well enough to attend the 40th reunion of the class of 77 last year. Will always remember that his accounting class provided a great foundation to the faculty of commerce. And the high school canoe trip was a highlight of my time at SCI. Thanks for going above and beyond - you made a difference! - Posted by: Shelley Morris (Student) on: Aug 19, 2018

  • He taught me math at Murdoch MacKay, he was very nice to me and helped me out in grade 12 math. And he was a nice guy and awesome teacher and will be missed - Posted by: Shawn Oliver (Former student at Murdoch mackay) on: Aug 12, 2018

  • Mr. B, this was really hard but we did it together. Sometimes when I was overwhelmed with all we were going through, I could only imagine what it was like for you bouncing from hope to fear and back again. When it felt like too much we held each other's hands & hugged. Some days were easier than others, but we walked the road together the whole way. You will always be in my heart. Hugs, Miss Lynn - Posted by: Lynn Pascoe (Wife) on: Aug 12, 2018

  • Hi Lynn and Brian's Family. It's very difficult for me to write this especially since I won't be able to enjoy the celebration of Brian's Life. Brian meant a lot to me as a working partner in Handball for many years and he will be missed in my house and the whole Handball family. I will have all you in my heart when the celebration Aug 19 but will not be able to be since I am in Denmark for the Christening of my third great-grandchild. Love from Calgary Teddy - Posted by: Teddy Juliussen (Handball friend) on: Aug 11, 2018

  • Thanks for challenging me to be better. Your business class laid the foundation of what I am today. You saw things that that I did not know existed in a young man. Thanks for taking the time and having the patience to inspire. Love always my friend, Allan Edie - Posted by: Allan Edie (Friend and former student) on: Aug 11, 2018
