ELVIN GEORGE KEHLER January 30, 1948 - August 18, 2018 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Elvin, on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at the Grace Hospital, at the age of 70 years. Left to mourn Elvin's passing are his wife Barbara; daughters, Paula (Terry) and Karen (Martin); granddaughters, Kayla (Bobby) and Amanda (Mike); brother Ron Kehler; sisters, Linda McDermid and Collen Columbus (Chris); sister-in-law Elaine (Herb), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father Jake Kehler; mother Marie Kehler; and brothers, Ervin (twin) and Glen and Wilfred (Lois). Elvin was born in Vita, MB and was a twin to his brother Ervin Kehler. Both Elvin and Ervin contracted polio at the age of four years but survived the dreaded disease. When the family moved a few years later they came to the Kirkfield Park area and pretty well stayed there. In his early years, Elvin was employed by Westinghouse and then to Vaughn Street Detention Home. In 1972 he joined the fire department. Firstly, he joined the St. James Fire Department and when amalgamation occurred he joined the City of Winnipeg Fire Department where he retired as Captain in 2003. Elvin enjoyed curling and golf and especially his trips to Texas with the boys. He also enjoyed meeting his buddies at ANAVETS #283 for a few pints. In 2013, from the ANAVETS, he received his life membership in the association in consideration of outstanding service since 1968. Elvin and Barb met when he was only 15 years of age. They would have been married for 52 years coming up this August 27, 2018. A celebration of Elvin's life will be held on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in ANAVETS #283, 3584 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Firefighter's Burn Fund. • Our sincerest condolences on the loss of a wonderful man. I've known "Mel" since childhood as he was a good friend of my Dad, Charlie Grant. I will always remember his bold personality and his constant teasing. I will forever remember him always showing me his "short" finger and telling me a different story every time in how it happened. He was a charmer, and I loved his stories of the endless shenanigans he and my Dad got into. He is at peace now and pain free. I am sure he will be teasing those angels up there. Keep on smiling Mel. Until we meet again. xo Tracey and Tom Miller - Posted by: Tracey Miller (Friend of the family) on: Aug 23, 2018

  • Barb, Paula, Karen and Family, we are so sorry to hear about Elvin's passing. Our hearts are saddened for all of you. Mom has asked me to pass on her condolences and love to all of you. Elvin sure was a good man, he touched so many people's lives and hearts. As a firefighter, construction worker and a good servant to the community, he was always willing to go the extra length to help others. More importantly he was a family man. I personally will never forget Elvin or Barb’s kindness to me when I lived in Winnipeg. Elvin and Barb were sure great cousin(s) and friend(s) to me. Elvin certainly helped me many a times, couldn’t have done it without his/their help. Elvin was a great Husband, Father and Grandfather. He sure LOVED his girls. Boy he couldn't talk enough about you girls when you were growing up or the grandbabies when they arrived. Please know that you are in all of our prayers and thoughts. • Dear Barb & Family, we are so very saddened to hear of Elvin’s passing. We met up with Elvin in the Vaughan Street Detention Centre work days and then briefly the Manitoba Youth Centre before Elvin joined the firefighters in St. James. A strong friendship bond was formed then. Although our paths went in different directions and our contact was not frequent, we always considered Elvin a very special friend. His generous friendly nature will be fondly remembered. Elvin’s unique cross handed golf grip was admired in golf games enjoyed in the past. Our thoughts are with you all in the days ahead. RIP Elvin. - Posted by: Grant & Margaret Ogonowski (Friend) on: Aug 22, 2018

  • To the family of Elvin, I met Elvin in 2012, at Sam Rayburn Golf Course. My golf group, along with him and his golf buddies, created many memories, and shared several stories as we all returned to the golf course every year in March. We played some great golf, and tipped a pint or two. He will be missed, and never forgotten. Al George, St. Louis, Missouri - Posted by: Al George (Friend) on: Aug 21, 2018
