PHILIP KUHTEY February 19, 1953 - September 2, 2018 It is with profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Philip Kuhtey of Winnipeg. He is survived by his wife Valarie, daughters Erin and Emily (Spencer), sisters Mary Joanne Kuhtey and Irene Kuhtey of Winnipeg, sister Theresa Kuhtey of Vancouver, numerous cousins, nephews Colin and Matthew MacRae and their families, sister-in-law Bev MacRae (Dwayne), mother-in-law Margaret Stephen, very close friend Gilles Rivard, and many other lifelong friends too numerous to list. Phil was predeceased by his parents Eva and Joseph Kuhtey. Phil grew up in St. Boniface and spent most of his adult life there. He was a Shipper/Receiver for many years at Russell Steel. In his late 20s he made a career change to work in the construction trades as a Journeyman Air Balance Technician, first at Air Movement Ltd., then at DFC Mechanical Services Ltd. He finally retired last Christmas and began to enjoy the good life that retirement brings. Unfortunately, this was cut far too short. He battled colon cancer back in 2009, and remained cancer free for many years. In early July he was diagnosed with lung cancer, which had metastasized to his brain. He maintained a positive attitude throughout his health struggles, firmly believing he would win this fight too. He was a good, kind man who loved the simple things in life: a gigantic bowl of ice cream, blueberry pie, reading a good book, and puzzles to keep the mind sharp. He loved a good meal, a cold beer after work, puttering in the yard and garage. He was a handyman extraordinaire, building many projects in our home, and was always ready to lend a hand to his daughters or friends with anything they might need. He loved the lake, going camping, and went fishing whenever he could. He loved to travel, be it a road trip to BC, or wintering in Cuba or Mexico. Most of all, he was a devoted family man. He loved his daughters, relishing their accomplishments, and was so proud of the young women they had become. Phil and Val had a very special bond. They began their life together 44 years ago, and were married for 31 years. The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful and compassionate care provided by Doctors Silvaggio, Kakamanu and Bieko, nurses and staff on GA5 and the Gamma Knife team at Health Sciences Centre and CancerCare who looked after Phil in his last days. Also, to Dr. Benson Yip of St. Boniface Hospital who provided wonderful care through his colon cancer journey. A memorial service will be held at Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Drive in Winnipeg, on Wednesday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m. Flowers gratefully declined. If you so desire, you may make a donation to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • My sincere condolences to Val and her daughters, and Phil’s sisters. I chummed around with Phil (and other friends of his and mine) for quite a while, mostly through the QE Junior High years. Phil was a very good and faithful friend to all of us; we spent a fair bit of time at each other’s houses, where I met/knew his sisters and his mom. Nice family. I’ve been thinking about my friends like Phil lately. Philip and I had a lot of good times at Buzz’s and Marty’s, the burger/ice cream joints that were at the top of Prosper Street (and Archibald). He and I hung out there near closing to help with clean-up to get a free burger and/or a milkshake! We weren’t from wealthy families. After our years at QE we got split up into separate classes. Girlfriends and work became our priorities. My wife (Micki) and I have lived in Ottawa for some time, but we do get back to Winnipeg. I was trying to hook up with Phil and possibly meet up, but I’m too late. I am so sad to read this news but I see Phil had a very successful and happy life. I am so happy to hear that. God bless Philip and his family. Contribution to CancerCare MB. - Posted by: Tom Price (Friend (Grade 6 - Grade 10)) on: Jan 16, 2021
