Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMYLES PATRICK MCCARTHY October 15, 1953 September 1, 2018 Myles left in the peace he had always desired on Saturday, September 1, 2018, in the Palliative Care Unit of Riverview Health Centre. He was a largely self-taught artist from early years, drawing and painting anything and everything, often inspired by fantasy fiction. He continued to draw and paint throughout his life, saying "My eye is my camera." He worked for many years as a scenic artist, painting the huge backdrops required for operas and ballets. Besides scenery for the Houston Opera and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in an earlier Nutcracker, his work was seen in some unusual places: posters, rock band backgrounds, films, even Dollywood. He travelled extensively, and particularly loved Mammallapuram, Tamil Nadu, south India, where he felt far more at home than in Canada. Srinivasan Ethiraj's family misses him greatly. As do his siblings, Lynne, Lawrence, Greg and Cathleen; nieces, Megan, Shannon and Tara, and many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Larry and Ella. We are grateful for the sensitive care from the wonderful nurses and doctors in the Palliative Home Care program and Palliative Care, Riverview Health Centre. Cremation has taken place and Myles did not wish to have a memorial service. If you wish, a donation in Myles' memory can be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation. I was privileged to work with Myles for several years at Michael Hagen's studio in Montreal, in the early '80s. He was someone I looked up to and admired intensely. He was undeniably skilled with a brush - but I also found him a trifle enigmatic. The smile was mild, but the eyes and eyebrows intense. An uncommon and intriguing combination. The thought has crossed my mind many times in the intervening years to try to find him again, to compare notes. Alas. - Posted by: Marcel Zalme (Colleague) on: Jun 20, 2020

I so very lucky to have known Myles and to have worked with him as a scenic artist both in Montreal at Michael Hagen's studio and at the Shaw Festival Theatre. We shared alot of laughs and cigarettes as we painted drops together. I haven't heard from him in years and have often wondered where he is and how he's doing. It's sad that I won't see him again. I've always half expected to see him on some unecpected paint call imagining him underplaying the time that has passed with a sly grin. Myles has been missed and will continue to be do. - Posted by: Karyn McCallum (Friend and colleague) on: Sep 13, 2018

Myles was one of the most gifted scenic artists in the world. I first met him in art school. He was a gentle soul with amazing talent. While my opportunities to work with Myles were few, I never forgot what it was like to work with such a rare genius. - Posted by: Linda Leon (Friend and colleague) on: Sep 13, 2018

Myles painted several of my sets, both for opera and theatre. He was a wonderful, talented colleague, who did great work. Not many as good as he anymore. - Posted by: Neil Jampolis (Colleague) on: Sep 13, 2018

Myles was a remarkable man. Whether executing a pen and ink sketch or a massive theatre drop, the result was always astounding. We first worked together at the Manitoba Theatre Centre in the 1970’s when he was the scenic artist on staff. The relationship continued in the mid 80’s at the Banff Centre, where he proved to be a very effective teacher and mentor to aspiring scene painters. His quirky sense of humour and ready smile were much appreciated. As happens, we lost touch over the years. The last letter I received was from India and written in Hindi I think he was showing off. The accompanying photo showed a man happy and engaged. I feel very fortunate to have known Myles and shared in many creative projects. My sincere condolences to all his family and friends. - Posted by: Bryn Finer (Friend) on: Sep 13, 2018

I met Myles in the late seventies at MTC ( now known as the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre RMTC) he was the Scenic Artist and I was the Head Carpenter, Myles was an exceedingly talented and gifted artist with a mischievous side. We enjoyed causing mischief together along with another character known as Wheels. This lead to having a band night where Myles brought his violin, Wheels on guitar, Jimmy on Bass, Margaret and I on vocals, We were horrible but had fun! To Myles' family my sincere sympathy on your loss. - Posted by: Charles E. Porter (Friend) on: Sep 10, 2018
