DR. ARTHUR DENE STEVENS Born March 16, 1931 - Winnipeg, MB Died August 3, 2018 - Claremont, CA We are saddened to announce the passing of Arthur, at his home in Claremont, California where he resided for the past many years. He is survived by son Michael of San Francisco, CA, and grandchildren, Liam and Blake of Vacaville, CA, as well as brother Ron and Irene Stevens, sister Shirley and Frank Mikuska, and sister-in-law Babs Stevens all of Winnipeg, and many nieces and nephews in Canada and USA. He was predeceased by wife Linda (Young), son William Dene Stevens, and brother Fred Stevens. Arthur was born in Winnipeg and spent his childhood in Birnie attending public school there and high school in Eden and Neepawa, Manitoba. He published a book "Tales of the Snake" in 2007 about his boyhood in Birnie, Manitoba. He graduated from University of Manitoba with Bachelors degrees in Fine Arts (1957), Pedagogy (1958) before heading to University of Indiana where he completed his Masters of Fine Arts and his PhD in Art History. He was Professor of Art History at Scripps College in Claremont, CA from the 1960s to retirement in 2001. While a student at the University of Manitoba, he served on the Student Council for both Fine Arts and Education. "Curly", as he was affectionately known, was a "wonder at providing fun and spirits". Arthur remembered his prairie roots and enjoyed many vacations here and throughout Canada. He was famous for making his martinis and sharing them with family and friends. One Christmas he put a prairie spin on the concoction by chilling the glasses in the snow and declaring them to be "Manitoba Martinis"! To celebrate a life well lived, raise your martini glass in a toast to Arthur!

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • For most of us, the internet provides a singular opportunity to search for those who are no longer in our lives. I came across Dr. Stevens obituary notice only a few days ago. Although it is now three years after his passing, I would be remiss in not acknowledging the enormous influence he had on my life. I was his student at Scripps College in the 1960's. An Art major who was a better art historian than artist, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:00 a.m. throughout my senior year found me in Dr. Stevens Art and Architecture of the Middle Ages class. It changed my life and transformed me into a lifelong lover of Medieval art. Dr. Stevens was one of my thesis readers on Romanesque and Gothic sculpture. I have dragged my husband through countless European churches and cathedrals. I became a costume designer and eventually a college instructor in Los Angeles. As well as classes in Theatrical Costume Design and General History of Dress, I taught all Art History sections. Dr. Stevens remained in my thoughts as the decades passed, as the miracles of medieval art that unfolded in that long ago class, marked and enriched my life. Perhaps no acquaintance or family member will ever read this, but I will continue to be grateful for the world he opened for me so long ago. I will treasure those memories for the rest of my life. - Posted by: Janice (Klein) Barnum (student) on: Nov 01, 2021

  • Condolences on behalf of Marian (Young) Sunthimer and family. Art provided loving care to his late wife Linda, our sister and aunt. For that and all the wit and wisdom - and Martinis - he brought to this life, he will always be remembered. Cheers to a full life! - Posted by: Joe (Ed) Sunthimer (nephew) on: Nov 09, 2018

  • My wife and I were chums of Art's back in the old School of Art days. He was always a very pleasant companion and we enjoyed his friendship. He seemed to have knowledge on almost any subject and it is great that he found a career in Art History. Our condolences to his family, especially, Ron and Irene, and Shirley and the Mikuska family. Our thanks to Frank for keeping us up to date about Art. Arnold and Pat Saper - Posted by: arnold saper (friend) on: Sep 24, 2018
