THOMAS ROBERT JOHNSTON July 8, 1925 - October 2, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, Thomas Robert (Bob) Johnston on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at the Deer Lodge Centre, in Winnipeg. We will infinitely miss his vast wisdom and wry sense of humour. Dad had a full, interesting and rewarding life. At the tender age of 17, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Reserve as a pilot. He was stationed in Northern England, where he led raids across the English Channel into war-torn Europe. When the Second World War ended, Dad returned to Canada as a Warrant Officer. At a military dance, he met the love of his life, Virginia Cardinal. Dad and Mom were married in 1946. Working as a miner and accountant, Dad took his family from Northern Ontario, to Nicaragua in Central America, before returning to Winnipeg. He was a member of Legion Branch 100, A.N.A.F 283. After a lengthy career as an accountant, C.M.A. with the federal government, Dad retired to spend his time with Mom travelling and puttering around in his garden. Predeceased by his loving wife Virginia (2004) and daughter Carol (2017), Dad leaves to mourn his passing his daughter Donna (Garry Boyce); son Robert (Wendy Ellis), daughter Joanne (Lou Urmos), son Gordon (Rina Gagnon); grandchildren: David (Connie Prestayko), Michael (Christine Beese), Joanne (Rick Morrisette), Heather, Scott (Leanne Peppler), Mark (Lina Fleihan), Blake, Sean (Sara Chester), Wade (Laura Fletcher) and Dean (Ashley Cox), Nathalie, Paul, Dylan, Jennifer; great-grandchildren: Ryan, Paige, Noah, Tiernan, Twila, Grace, Ty, Sophie, Chloe, Ainslee, Rylan, Olivia, Bennett, Gibson, Miles, Leland, Emma, Alice, Calla, Hayden and Mackenzie; and great-great-granddaughter Angel. A private celebration of Dad's life will be held Friday, October 12, 2018. Immediately following, Dad's ashes will be placed next to Mom's in the Royal Canadian Legion Columbarium at Brookside Cemetery. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I lived next to Bob since the day I was born in 1988 up to just a couple years ago. I can remember Bob was always out in his very large garden tending to its needs constantly. Once I was old enough to walk I would be knocking on his door and he would always answer with a smile on his face, I would want him to help me catch frogs. And he would grab the "frog broom" and we would go into the back yard and he would sweep through the tall grass and I would grab the frogs as they came hopping out. It might have got to be a little much because I started asking him every day, but he would always come out no question, that was the type of guy he was, always on the move, always doing something. Also a few times me and my brother got in trouble for smashing a few of his prized vegetables...but kids with be kids and Bob didn't take it personally. Ill never forget Bob for the quiet kind gentlemen that he was, condolences to his family .. thanks for all the good memories. - Posted by: Tanner Franklin (Neighbour) on: Feb 20, 2019
