JAMES STEPHEN (STEVE) MERRETT James Stephen (Steve) Merrett, aged 86, of Burnaby, BC, passed away peacefully after a five-year struggle with Congestive Heart Failure, on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Steve was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 15, 1931 and was preceded by his wife of 48 years, Victoria Ludmilla (Jakimowich). He was a loving father to his daughter Anne (carol) and son Joe (Kimberly) and his grandsons, Oliver, Justin and Connor. He had a wonderful career as an economist in the transportation, oil and gas industries. He loved the fine arts and was a renaissance man who was always socially ahead of his time. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the George Derby Centre for their loving care and support.

  • Anne and Joe and families, It is with great sadness that Rick and I learned today about the passing of your dad and grandfather. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Time hastens on for all of us, and we did not keep in touch with your dad after he moved to BC. I am glad that you, Anne and Carol and Oliver, got an opportunity to bond closely with Steve out there. It has been a long time since we were together as symphony couples with your folks in Winnipeg. Your dad was always so welcoming to us at your cottage in Matlock. His wry sense of humour was always appreciated! Well I remember the wonderful times together with your mom in the Cookie Gang, and my chance to be at Joe and Kimberly’s wedding! Hopefully you will receive this message, as this is the only way I know to connect with you both once again.
