CAROL DEBORAH SHAND Born: May 31, 1950 Date of passing: October 10, 2018 It is with extreme sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Carol D. Shand. Carol passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her father Sydney, mother Esther, brother Barry Chapman, and granddaughter Shirley Shand. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, George Shand, daughters, Heather (Clinten), Sheena (Craig) and Miranda (Joel); grandchildren (Baba to) Tobey Jay, Zoey and Gunner; sister Lynne; brother Larry; sisters, Adrianne (husband David Stetch, sons, Myles, Evan), Molly (husband Paul Pasichnyk, son Eron) and Beth Pasichnyk (children, Harlan, Karmel and Bryer). Carol was a phenomenal woman who had not one, but two successful careers in her lifetime. Her first love was nursing, and teaching her second. In her 20s, Carol was a championship University of Manitoba curler, she also goaltended for the University's Women's Field Hockey Team. She was an avid sports fan, her particular favourite being the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. She started her RN career in Manitoba in Vita, and many hospitals in the province and on to Calgary. It was there she fell in love with and married her devoted husband George. Shortly thereafter they moved to Gillam, MB. Over the span of 15 years, Carol worked as an RN, exercising her BEd, she then became a teacher at Gillam School all the while raising her three daughters. She also loved volunteering as Gillam's head Brownie and Girl Guide leader. Carol made many sacrifices for her family. After moving back to Winnipeg, she eventually returned to her nursing career at the Misericordia Health Centre. She was the proud local president for the Misericordia MNU for 11 years, and was on the board of the nurses union directors. A title she took much esteem and pride in holding. For personal reasons Carol left her nursing career and moved back to Gillam to be with her beloved grandchildren. She returned to teaching in Gillam School at the age of 61 until her retirement. Having retired from both careers at the age of 66, Carol began to enjoy her much deserved retirement. She looked forward to her daily coffee with her soul-mate George, and spending time with her cats. Although the time to enjoy her retirement was cut short, she enjoyed it to the fullest. Carol was a treasury of advice in all manners of life. She also threw immaculate Jewish New Year, Passover, and Chanukah dinners. Her detailed birthday cake decorating would put most bakers' work to shame! Carol always went out of her way to help others, giving them care parcels of homemade goods or little gifts she put together. She would graciously tell stories of her family and her youth and adored looking through old family photos. She will be remembered fondly, especially for her astute sense of humour and her boisterous infectious laugh! She believed one of the best ways to honour a loved one's memory was to remember the good times. She will be forever missed, and forever loved. Private graveside service took place at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital Emergency Department, the Grace Hospital ICU Department, and her nurse Juliette. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba in Carol's memory. Such a beautiful tribute to Carol. She accomplished so much in her life, never forgetting to spread love and kindness along the way. She was always a pillar of strength, she was my security while growing up. I will never forget that. That is a beautiful picture. Her husband, children and grandchildren were what she worked hard for and devoted herself to. She was a very proud Jewish woman, wife and mother. She was also an amazing sister. May she always know eternal peace. She will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Addy Chapman Stetch (Sister) on: Oct 20, 2018

May Carol Rest In Peace! Although we followed different roads in life, I have always remembered fondly my friendship during high school & university & later on, with Carol. And by extension, her family on Arrowwood! Back then, we were both shy teenagers who weren’t quite ready to take the world on but we shared our dreams & goals and pretty much all of our time together. She was my bestie ! Funny, quick witted (like her dad), freezing at bus stops for university, sharer of secrets! I send my love to Carol’s siblings who embraced, this only child, into their big welcoming family! Carol always wanted her own children and with George, had them they did. And ..what a magnificent career & legacy you have left for them to cherish. - Posted by: Chris Slipetz Los (childhood friend) on: Oct 20, 2018
