RUDOLPH (RUDY) SAIN July 24, 1926 - September 18, 2018 On September 18, 2018, Rudy passed away peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre, at the age of 92. Rudy is survived by his four sons: Guy (Peggy Kasuba) of Beausejour, John of St. Andrews, Mitchell (Mina Wallace) of Toronto and David (Lori) of Winnipeg. He also leaves nine cherished grandchildren: Tracy Sain (Doug), Kim Jones (Derek), Treena Bilous (Jason), Kelly Sain (Krista), Tamara Zastre (Brett), Andrew Sain (Leezann), Hilary Sain (Seth), Paige Sain (Mark) and Madison Sain (Jonathan), and nine beloved great-grandchildren: Kyle Vanderelst, Savannah and Sierra Jones, Sarah and Ryan Bilous, Brayden and Rylee Sain and Emily and Alyssa Zastre. He is also survived by his brother, Peter of Winnipeg. Rudy was predeceased by Johanna, his wife of 69 years, in 2016. Rudy was also predeceased by his parents, Mike and Mary Sain (Gincilowska), his brother, Larry, sisters, Josie Rzonca, Julia Quick and Stephanie Sain and his daughter-in-law, Wendy Sain. Rudy was born in East Kildonan and lived there his entire life. After serving in the Canadian Army, Rudy worked as a house painter and then became a Stationary Engineer for Swift's and the Government of Manitoba. The boys fondly remember Rudy teaching them to skate using bob skates in the backyard rink, and eventually learning to play hockey with Rudy every day at the neighbourhood rink. With four boys involved, he became quite skilled at repairing, maintaining and even creating hockey equipment. His friends and family knew him as an exceptional handyman, who spent spare time with his boys working on automobiles, renovating homes and ultimately building their beloved cottage at Grand Beach. This trait was handed down to his grateful sons and their families. Rudy was a man of few words (a fact compensated for by Johanna), but when he spoke, it was worth listening to. Rudy met Johanna, the love of his life, in high school. They were married on September 27, 1947 and were seldom apart until Johanna entered Riverview in late August 2016. They spent many decades at Grand Beach, beginning with train rides on the Moonlight Special to the Dance Pavilion on the Boardwalk. Many of their happiest memories were from the countless summers they spent at the beach with their family. Rudy was active in many sports in his later years, including volleyball, curling and golf. He and Johanna were also avid sports fans who supported the Goldeyes, the Manitoba Moose and the Winnipeg Jets. In their retirement years, they enjoyed many cruises and a highlight was a trip to Churchill to see the polar bears. They were longtime members of John Black United Church and were honoured as part of John Black's 100th anniversary celebrations in 2014. Rudy and Johanna's lives revolved around their family, above all their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandpa was actively involved with Grandma in helping to raise all of their grandchildren. They regularly attended the kids' many activities - Grandpa's quiet support offsetting Grandma's enthusiastic cheers. They were present for birthday celebrations for all family members, often travelling out of town to attend the parties, and Christmas was a time for everyone to get together. Rudy was a wonderful teaching father and a loving and dedicated husband, grandfather and great-grandpa. He was much loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. The family thanks the caring and compassionate staff at Deer Lodge Centre, Tower Six, for their kindness and support over the past two years. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. Interment of Rudy and Johanna will take place in Elmwood Cemetery on Saturday, November 3 at 11:00 a.m. Enter via Beatrice Street off Hespeler Avenue (Redwood). A reception will follow at 1:00 p.m. at 800 Elm Street.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Aunty Jo and Uncle Rudy were a very important part of my childhood and family life. I enjoyed seeing them when we visited Winnipeg. The last time we came to Winnipeg, we all went to the Zoo together. They also took us to their favourite Chinese restaurant. I miss them each and every day. With love; Susan, Mike, Andre and Anna Audet - Posted by: Susan (neice) on: Oct 27, 2018
