EVELYN MARGARET (DOT) TREACY On Friday, October 26, 2018, peacefully and in her own time, our mom passed away at the wonderful age of 92. She will be greatly missed by her children, Micheal (Jennifer), Pat (Heidi) and Ron (Misty, deceased); grandchildren, Nicole and Michelle and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Brayden, Liam and Jesse. She was predeceased by Reg, her husband of 66 years, in 2014. Dot was one of nine children born at home to Wilfred and Agnes Valois in Barrie, Ontario. In 1944, already an independent spirit, she moved to Toronto where she went to high school and worked at the Kresge Department store. At the store, she excelled at decorating the store windows. Her love of decoration and display continued throughout her life. Nothing was ever plain or boring when Dot was involved. She filled our lives with colour. Later, Dot moved to Mattawa, Ontario and took a municipal clerical position until a new Hudson Bay store opened, and her fate was sealed. She got not only a great job, but also met Reg. They were married on July 10, 1948. Together, they managed the Hudson Bay outpost trading stores at Deer Lake, Sandy Lake and Pikangikum through the 1950s. In 1960 they founded Fishing Lake lodge near Pauningassi, Manitoba. Together they built, managed and promoted the business, but it really was her cooking that kept their guests coming back. The fishing was great, but the food even better. Dot was a creative woman: embroidery, knitting, crocheting, sewing, doll collecting and setting up astonishing Christmas tableaus in her dining room every year. Her afghans were highly treasured by all her family and Reg wore the Buffalo Wool sweaters and socks she knitted for him all his life. Dot's grandchildren were the only girls to have Cabbage Patch dolls with knitted wardrobes. Besides knitting for her grandchildren, she also knitted items for premature babies cared for at Victoria Hospital. A large portion of Dot's extensive doll collection is now on display at the St. Vital Museum. When Reg and Dot retired, she did not slow down. Dot volunteered at Victoria Hospital for 18 years and participated in fundraising craft sales that contributed to the hospital's expansion and provided needed equipment for the diagnostic and emergency wards. She decided to learn to drive and got her license. Dot learned to curl with her friend Marg. She joined a Stitch and B!tch Club, became active in the St. Vital United Church congregation and helped with baking and crafts fundraisers until health issues curtailed her activities. Even at the age of 92, music would start Mom dancing and snapping her fingers. And Dot was a jitterbug expert, having danced with her mother at a local dance hall during the Second World War. Although she was only five feet tall, she taught us all to think big and when the music starts, dance. There will be a private funeral service, reception at Wojcik's Funeral Chapel followed by an interment. We would like to thank Lion's Manor on Worthington and River Park Gardens for the home away from home they provided for our mother.
