Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTERRANCE KUMKA August 13, 1953 - October 30, 2018 Terrance, better known as Terry, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, in the afternoon. He died after an unpleasant battle with ALS. Terry loved people. He thrived on being around them and would rarely, if ever, decline a social invitation. He was kind, generous, endearing and genuine. He exuded positivity, which was infectious to those he encountered. Terry would not hesitate to go out of his way to help others. He also possessed an excellent sense of humour, continuing to make people laugh despite his affliction with ALS. Terry was passionate about music and saw his favourite band, The National, live in concert 22 times, despite the fact that they have never performed in Winnipeg. Terry was a lawyer and well respected in the legal community. He worked for MPI for over 30 years and did not plan on retiring any time soon. He was a fixture downtown and could regularly be seen walking the streets and indoor walkways during work weeks, always stopping to converse with others along the way. Terry was an exceptional father and leaves behind two loving sons, Neil and Sean, in addition to three younger brothers. He touched the lives of many in a positive way and will be greatly missed. This is incredibly sad. I knew Terry in high school and I remember him as a decent and fun guy. I'm glad that he led a good life but sad that he has passed. - Posted by: Richard Lane (Zahalan) (Former classmate) on: Apr 17, 2022

Terry will always remind me of Gord Downie and his song "Use it up, use it all up. Don't save a thing for later... " Terry inspires us to get lost in music. Make memories. Make friends. Plan (as only Terry could do) and go on adventures. Have experiences. Worry less about the things that don't matter. Show up. Wring as much as you can out of life and gulp down every last drop. Pack in as much living into life as possible. You are missed! - Posted by: Debbie Smith (Friend) on: Nov 19, 2018

We have known Terry for over 40 years. Joanne worked with Terry’s dad, Ed, at Air Canada. We shared Terry’s love of music. Later in life, we became good friends with Terry’s brother Steve & wife Janet. Terry always sewed good seeds in life & subsequently always had good crops of friends. We are honoured to have known Terry & offer our most sincere condolences to the entire Kumka family. - Posted by: Bruce Hunt & Joanne Mackinnon-Hunt (Friends) on: Nov 08, 2018

I was deeply saddened to read here of the passing of my old friend Terry. We were very close friends in high school and university, thanks initially to our mutual love of basketball. I have fond memories of dribbling our basketballs up and down the back lanes of River Heights trying out every garage-mounted basket we could find just for the fun of it. I moved to another province and then to another country and lost touch, but was delighted to find when I ran into him years later that he was the same warm, sociable, enthusiastic, enjoyable friend I remembered from my youth. I noted with admiration (and some jealousy) his sub-1:50 time in the Manitoba Half Marathon a few years back and dreamed of running it with him one day. Time passes so quickly. Goodbye old friend. - Posted by: Paul Paskewitz (Friend) on: Nov 07, 2018

Terry was a familiar face at Winnipeg concerts and I always enjoyed chatting with him about music — I once even ran into him at a National show in Minneapolis. Although I never saw him in court, he was a worthy adversary at frequent trivia challenges; the last time I saw him, his team trounced mine to take first place (he was gracious but would never let me forget it). His enthusiasm, especially while watching a show, was infectious. My heartfelt condolences to his family. - Posted by: Jill Wilson (Friend) on: Nov 06, 2018

I met Terry through my late husband Wayne bringing blues bands into town. Terry always attended. I will miss his presence and offer my deepest condolences to his boys and all whom he loved. - Posted by: Cynthia Faulkner (friend in blues) on: Nov 06, 2018

Terry was my best childhood friend. I knew him the the late 50's. His parents owned a grocery store behind where I lived with my family on Bannatyne. We played a lot together after school. I still have birthday party pictures in my album. Wonderful memories to this day of Terry. - Posted by: Lorne Bilawka (Childhood friend) on: Nov 05, 2018

I first met Terry as a legal adversary in his role as counsel for MPI. He was always a worthy opponent. What set him apart from others however was his ability to befriend others and draw them in to his life away from law. We shared many a beer at the Park Theatre where we listened to whatever band was in town. He never failed to enthralled us with his stories of his travels to visit the many bands he enjoyed so much. Terry you will be missed. - Posted by: Ralph. Neuman (Friend ) on: Nov 05, 2018

I am surprised and very saddened to hear of Terry’s death. I had the pleasure of encountering this delightful man when our paths crossed as lawyers, but we connected over our mutual love of music. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Joel Katz (Friend) on: Nov 03, 2018
