LAWRENCE SAMEC Lawrence Samec passed away November 22, 2018 at 79 years of age. He was born in Winnipeg to Teenie and Eli Samec. He is survived by his wife Florence and his children, Monica (Barry), Michael, Ryan, Daniel (Christina) and Rachel, his sister Beverley (Les Blues), and his brother Donald (Vikki) Samec. His academic life started in a one-room Hadishville school house and progressed to Lorette Centre Collegiate Institute, the University of Manitoba, and the University of California Los Angeles. At that time, it was a great accomplishment to graduate with a degree in agriculture and even more exceptional to earn a medical degree. He chose the developing field of endocrinology as his specialty. He worked as a doctor for an airline before becoming medical director of an endocrine laboratory and in private practice for almost 50 years. One of his greatest joys was helping his patients, and he was proud when they said he treated them "like aunties and uncles". He loved taking his German Shepherds for walks in the park. He is remembered as a young soul who was constantly losing things, a nature enthusiast who frequented in and around Yosemite National Park, a confident Canadian, a dedicated ice hockey and Los Angeles Kings supporter. A graveside service will take place on December 1 at 3:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, California. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Yosemite Conservancy or the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Larry was a year ahead of our class at U of M. Very nice guy. We visited him in the LA area, then he and Ed Tyrchniewicz visited us in Orange Co. on their way to San Diego in about 1980. Fond memories. Dave Ashton. - Posted by: Dave Ashton (Fellow Aggie) on: Dec 08, 2018

  • Larry was the first Doctor in our family and I remember being so proud of him plus so excited that he was living in LA. My favourite memory was when Larry sent his parents on th farm a coloured TV which was the first time I had seen one. When ever we visited Auntie Teenie and Uncle Eli, we got to watch it. While the miles separated us, he always had a special place in my heart. Rest In Peace Larry! Our condolences to all the family! - Posted by: Marianne Evashuk (Joss) (Cousin) on: Nov 28, 2018

  • Larry always made time to visit family whenever he was back home (Manitoba) and extended an invitation to visit him in LA if we ever got the chance. His visits were always a pleasure. RIP dear Larry. Sincerest condolences to Flora, Children & siblings Bev & Don. - Posted by: Janalee Fedorchuk (Melnick) (Cousin) on: Nov 27, 2018

  • I remember visiting the Samec farm on many summer vacations. Playing tricks on 'the city girls" was always his specialty. After Larry moved to LA, he was always generous in accommodating out of town visitors. My favourite memory of Larry was, one evening pulling up in the driveway, only to find his car, with the door and trunk wide open, and inside was Larry fast asleep on the couch with groceries still waiting to be unloaded from the car. To Florence and family, my deepest condolences. He will now be resting in peace. - Posted by: Irene (Silinski) Bradley (Cousin) on: Nov 27, 2018

  • Larry’s father Eli was not only my Great-Uncle, but also my Godfather, & we spent many years going to Hashville. Larry often visited/stayed with my family in St Boniface when he was going to University. He’d walk into our house, wearing his long coat & fedora, & the next minute he was picking me up to sit on his knee. When I visited Flora & Larry in LA, he still mentioned, with a big smile on his face, how wonderful Auntie Minnie’s mashed potatoes were & how welcome we all made him feel. I feel very lucky to have had Larry in my life, & to get to know Flora, Monica, Ryan, Michael, Daniel & Rachel. Our thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Christine Hallem Ward (Cousin) on: Nov 27, 2018
