WERNER GERHARD VICTORIA February 25, 1958 - November 23, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved "Mumbles" at the age of 60. Werner was born and raised in Celle, Germany and immigrated to Canada at the age of 18 when he was stationed with the army in Shilo, MB. In subsequent years Werner has called Winnipeg home although he was a great lover of travel and has been many places across the world. He also has many dear friends scattered throughout Canada and the U.S. as his livelihood was long haul truck driving. Werner took genuine interest in people and had the ability to make friends anywhere he travelled. He deeply valued his connections with friends and neighbours, many of whom he considered family, and enjoyed hosting elaborate BBQs / dinners at his home. He was very thoughtful and giving and was known for sending numerous postcards from everywhere along his hauls. Left to cherish his memory are his love of 11 years, Lori Watson, stepdaughter Leia Sapina (Denis), and the apples of his eye, grandsons, Jacek and Keelan Sapina "the ice cream gang"; along with so many dear friends who will miss him. Werner could be recognized for many years by his statement 'colours of Deutschland' Peterbilt truck which made Payne magazine. He had earned multiple plaques for safe driving and has driven for Krenkevich Trucking, Three Star Trucking, and most recent Payne Transport. The family would like to extend our gratitude for all the support from friends and Werner's employer Tom Payne and the many staff of Payne Transport whom have gone above and beyond to make this difficult time bearable. No funeral service will be held, in honour of Werner's wishes. The family has been so grateful to receive several beautiful bouquets and baskets as Werner almost always had fresh flowers in his kitchen. He himself left a most gracious donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in his will, as Werner had lost both his parents and sister at younger ages to heart disease. Anyone wishing to honour his memory could donate as well in Werner's name if it would give them a sense of peace to do so. Rest peacefully big guy, know that you are so loved and carried such a presence in this life that will be deeply missed by many. This was your last haul dear friend, it feels like you are only gone on the road now. We will cherish your memory until we meet again...Auf Wiedersehen.

  • Our thoughts and prayers go out to you Lorie and your family at this time. I first met Werner in 1986 when he was driving for Trappers Transport. We remained close friends and visited back and forth through the years. Both my wife and I were devistated when we learned about the sudden death of the Big Guy. He will be truly missed May he rest in peace. Frank and Agnes Feeney. - Posted by: Frank Feeney, Chilliwack . BC (Friend) on: Dec 10, 2018

  • I met Werner in 1999 when he and I drove matching Ford LTL trucks at Trappers. We would hang out in Texas waiting for backhauls. I always felt pretty untouchable walking in to a bar with my giant friend. Our work lives paralleled for decades from Trappers to Krenkevich and then Payne. He had a gentle side that came out with my kids when they were young, allowing them to view his stuffed bear collection at his apartment. Werner was proud of his ability to grill a perfect steak but you’d better have an answer when he asked what type of steak you’d like. To this day my wife and I repeat to each other in our best Werner accents “No Vat-ever!” He would also show off his abilities as a baker when he’d show up at our door with a double layer torte, one giant piece missing that he claimed went well with a coffee while watching NASCAR. He surprised me when he decided to try something different and showed up working the oil patch with me again at Three Star in Saskatchewan. He was always known to me as a California driver who liked his trucks shining so playing in the dirt in the oil patch was way outside his comfort zone. Running with him always proved interesting trying to understand some of the CB talk with his thick accent but the stories were fun to listen to. He’d really get animated when telling the story about tearing his fuel tank open on a fire hydrant at a fancy California shopping mall and slinking away before the environmental cops could lock him up and throw away the key. If he knew you as a friend he would give the shirt off his back and back you up in any situation. We were sad to hear of his passing and send our condolences. RIP Werner. - Posted by: Richard Holland (Friend ) on: Dec 09, 2018

  • Our thoughts and prayers go out to you Lori and your family during this time of grief. We were shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Werner. We all enjoyed when Werner would come by to visit. Sadly, he was in our office the previous Friday to his passing. Dwane and Werner talked trucks and as usual they threw some funny jabs at one another. Other visits always included conversation about food, travel and politics. Its difficult to think we will not see Mumbles walk into the room again and hear his voice telling us stories. He was our friend and he will be truly missed.
