CHARLIE VAN DE KEERE September 29, 1933 - December 24, 2018 Charlie passed away peacefully, surrounded by love on December 24, 2018 at the age of 85 at Riverview Health Centre, Winnipeg. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Elizabeth (nee Kuz), son Michael (Siobhan) and daughter Carol (Lavern) Vercaigne as well as his four grandchildren, Stephen (Jess), Caleigh, Caitlyn and Devan and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and sisters-in-law, Mary Van De Keere of Trail, BC and Helen Van De Keere of Winnipeg. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Petrus and Elisa, brothers, Julien (Mary), Emile and Arthur; sisters, Erma (Peter F.) Loeppky, Elsie (Adolph) Polanski, Irene (Doug) Dunn and Yvonne; niece Diane Polanski, nephew Barry Van De Keere and nephew-in-law Ken Normand. The youngest of eight children, Charlie grew up in St. Vital now the corner of Bishop Grandin and St. Anne's Road attending Lavallee School and St. Emile Roman Catholic Church. After the 1950 flood, he started working full time first at Jensen Bros. produce distributor and then at Eastern Smallwares for 49 years retiring in 2001. Charlie enjoyed playing sports especially hockey and baseball, instilling this passion in his family. He loved to spend time outside and always had a garden both in the city and at his sister Erma's farm in Niverville. We will miss his fresh garden tomatoes and cucumbers that he always shared with us. Married for 54 years, Dad and Mom raised their family in St. Vital and attended Holy Cross Parish. Many afternoons were spent skating with his children on the Seine River and at St. Vital Park. When the grandchildren came, he was their greatest fan, cheering and coaching from the stands. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 31 at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Parish, 252 Dubuc Street with Father John McKenzie presiding. Viewing and eulogy at 10:00 a.m. with mass to follow at 10:30 a.m. Interment in the Belgian Sacred Heart Cemetery, 503 Plinguet. A special thank you to all his caregivers throughout this journey and to our family and friends for their prayers. If anyone wishes, donations may be made in his memory to the Holy Cross Parish - Kitchen Fund. God has blessed us with many precious memories. E.J. COUTU & CO. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I am offering my condolences with the passing of Charlie Van de Keere. My cousins, Elien and Myriam Van de Keere from Belgium want to express their condolences too. They wonder if someone tried to contact them by email, but it was accidentally deleted, and if Petrus Van de Keere, Charlie's father, was maybe a brother or cousin of Elien's father. On the picture, the resemblance is striking. Elien was born in Oost Vlaanderen (province of East Flanders) in Belgium. If you want to contact them by mail rather than email: Myriam and Elien Van de Keere, Kleinbeekweg 6, B2970 Schilde, Belgium. Or contact me by email: veronik43@gmail.com. - Posted by: Veronique Schreurs, writing for Elien and Myriam Van de Keere (Cousin of Myriam Van de Keere) on: Feb 12, 2019

  • Uncle Charlie was a kind and gentle man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him! As a child I was very excited to visit Uncle Charlie and Aunty Liz. I will always remember before leaving the house Uncle Charlie would check all the windows, all the doors. It was comforting to come back to their house after visiting other family members to a safe and secure home. Thank you Uncle Charlie, rest with the angels. You will never be forgotten! • He will be greatly missed. My condolences to the family and know he is at peace now and pain free. - Posted by: Bonnie Normand (Niece ) on: Dec 29, 2018

  • Uncle Charlie was a wonderful uncle. He had a fun sense of humor and timely wit. He had an ability to stay in the background but be present in every conversation. He did not need to be front and center to impact a conversation. Whenever we came to Winnipeg, we were welcomed with open arms by him and Auntie Liz. I always felt the importance of family in their home. Uncle Charlie has left a legacy of a loving and caring family who, by example, carry those values forward for another generation to experience. And the strength of the bonds with their father and grandfather will remind them to live with these values at their core. Is there any better legacy?
