ILMARS ALBERT KURAS August 4, 1953 - January 7, 2019 With heavy hearts we share the passing of our friend Ilmars. He leaves to mourn his father Albert; sister Cindy (Jim); brother Perry (Rose); his niece Juliana; nephews, David and Warren; as well as many extended relatives and friends. He has been reunited with his loving mother Dzidra who passed last Christmas. Ilmars was born in Melbourne, Australia, where his parents had met after fleeing Europe during the Second World War. Some family had moved to Canada, so they carried on to Winnipeg where Ilmars grew up in Fort Garry, with his siblings and many life-long friends. Ilmars was a free spirit; as a young man Ilmars had a sense of adventure and wanted to see what the world had to offer. He was a man of the open road, travelling for junior hockey, hitting the highway on his motorcycle and touring across Canada with Harlequin. His days with Harlequin even led him to Venezuala. He later anchored down with his father to work on building the family business, Albert Controls. Albert Controls was more than a job to Ilmars, it was a place of pride, value, family and friends. He has built many relationships with the trades community and leaves behind many friends. He was a big guy with an even bigger heart. He had a big personality and we can reflect on the many good memories we share. His spare time was spent at Twin Lake Beaches where he built his own piece of paradise. He loved hockey; hockey drafts with his buddies was something he looked forward to all year. Thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. We are forever grateful for your support and outreach. He had a positive impact on so many peoples lives. He now rests in a better place. A celebration of life service in Ilmars' memory will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ilmars' memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.ca. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenedenmemorial.ca Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 204-338-7111

  • It was extremely sad news to hear of the passing of my friend Ilmars (Cosmo). Far too many dear memories to share in one paragraph. My deepest sympathies to his family, particularly his father Albert. No child should predecease their parents. R.I.P. Ilmars, the world is a little less bright without you, and I will always cherish the memories we shared. Don - Posted by: DON TORRIE (FRIEND) on: Jan 28, 2019

  • Thinking of the Kuras family as they say goodbye to Imars today. As a long time friend of Cindy I had the pleasure of knowing Ilmars over many years. I will always credit Imars with providing a lot of edge to growing up in Winnipeg in the 70's. Introducing us to great music on the biggest home speakers in Winnipeg in his multicoloured apartment in a somewhat sketchy neighbourhood. Motorcycle rides and one degree of separation from local rock stars. His unique take on the world was always enlightening. His sense of humour was like no other. He was a sweet guy and will be missed by all. Val Gilbert. - Posted by: Valerie Gilbert (Family Friend) on: Jan 19, 2019

  • Our thoughts are with the Kuras family at this difficult time. Growing up in Fort Garry on Marshall Bay as a friend of Cindy the Kuras family was always fun to be around. Ilmars, although an intimidating man was actually sweet, funny and very kind. Condolences to you all. Patti Gilbert and Family - Posted by: Patti Gilbert Green (friend) on: Jan 14, 2019

  • Our family has been friends with the Kuras family since we were kids growing up in Fort Garry. Ilmars always made me laugh when I was with him. He was so smart, witty and caring. He always referred to me as “Cindy Poo” when I called Alberts Controls to talk to Cindy. My thoughts are with the Kuras family. - Posted by: Cindy Gammon (Howorth) (Friend) on: Jan 14, 2019

  • I am very sad to hear that Ilmars was unable to regain his health after retirement. He had told me how thankful he was to the rest of the family for giving him the opportunity to try. Ilmars was a "work brother" for fourteen years and as family I occasionally found his perfectionism difficult, but there was never any doubt about his dedication to the business and his customers. Yes he was a big kind man. He was also extremely intelligent, well spoken and able to convey a thought in writing as all who had dealings with him knew. My condolences go out to all the family who as I did, wished a healthier, longer life for Ilmars. May he rest in peace. Celia - Posted by: Celia Almeida (Former colleagues ) on: Jan 12, 2019

  • Condolences to Ilmars's family. Ilmars was truly one of the "good guys". We will miss his humour, his friendliness, and the ceremony of the hockey draft that he oversaw. It's been 33 years and it will never be the same. Rest in Peace, buddy. - Posted by: Gary Brownstone (Hockey Drafter ) on: Jan 12, 2019

  • Like so many of us we are truly saddened by Ilmars’s Passing. Its never a good time to leave us but whe HE calls it is time to go. We have so many memories to share. He was a part of our lives growing up and beyond. He was (and still is) an influence on our lives. There is no doubt that ILMARS will always be missed by all who knew him. To his family, we offer our humble condolences. We pray that GOD provides us all with strength, courage, and compassion to help us on the road of “healing” Ilmars, you will be missed... With our love and heavy hearts... Rudy and Bernice - Posted by: Rudy & Bernice Kitsch (Friends ) on: Jan 12, 2019
