SHIRLEY ALICE CIPRYK (nee HEWETT) March 5, 1934 - January 10, 2019 With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Cipryk on Thursday, January 10, 2019. She was 84 years old. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Michael of Winnipeg; Sharon (Kevin) Carroll of Gibsons, BC and Pamela (Brian Scharfstein) of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Erica Scharfstein, Macy (Stephen) Fine, Joanne (Martin) Carroll and Lisa (Ben) Carroll as well as five great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Bob (Vera) Hewett and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley was predeceased by her son Colin and her brothers, Ron (Dorothy) Hewett and Ken (Anthea) Hewett. Shirley was born in Winnipeg to the late William "Bill" and Mary Hewett on March 5, 1934. She attended Oak Bluff School where she easily skipped two grades and later graduated from Gordon Bell High School at the age of 16. Too young to be accepted at university, she found a job working at Great West Life. Shirley met Norman Cipryk as a young woman at a dance in Oak Bluff. They married June 26, 1953 and raised their four children in Charleswood. A loving mother and homemaker, Shirley was a remarkable baker and seamstress but was most at home digging in the family's large vegetable garden and many flower beds. Her natural talent and love of sports followed from childhood where she shone on the ball field as a star short-stop into her 40s and won many badminton tournaments. Shirley returned to university to graduate in 1979 with a degree in Pedagogy and embarked on a beloved career as an elementary school teacher. She initially taught at Beaumont School in Charleswood and later at Laidlaw School in Tuxedo, where she remained to retirement. Post-retirement Shirley enjoyed travelling with friends and later accompanying her mother, Mary to Apache Junction, Arizona for many enjoyable winters. She spent many years exploring nature and travelling abroad with her close companion, Dimitrios Styliaras. Shirley had an incredible love for books of all kinds which always surrounded her. Nobody was better at reading stories than Grammy. A private memorial service will be held followed by a private interment service at Oak Bluff Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be announced and held at a later date this year in Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of one's choosing. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit www.chapellawn.ca. Shirley was my second mom growing up in Charleswood on Oakdale Drive. My sister Roberta and I spent many hours in their home playing piano and bagpipes with Sharon. Shirley was a tough competitor on the badminton court and we all loved to play together, including my mom Merlin. Her love for us kids was unconditional. Her humour and warmth and courage kept her going through good times and tough times. She will be missed by many. Heartfelt condolences to Sharon ,Michael, and Pam and all their loved ones. - Posted by: Rhonda McIntosh (Family friend) on: Feb 04, 2019

Sharon, Pam, Michael (cousins in time but not forgotten) Remembering simpler times with you and your families in these sad moments. Aunt Shirley was a kind women with a big heart, soft spoken and a big garden lol. (peas you know had to be eaten you know right off the vine). Time and distance has separated many of us and contacts lost as cousins or otherwise. I pray that each of you will heal with her passing. I truly understand what all of you are going through but time will grant great memories and lessons learned from her. Your angel will always be there at your side. From my heart..hugs to all xoxo Sandra - Posted by: Sandra Phillips (niece) on: Jan 23, 2019

Going to or from my parents' house on Hilton over the years, the Cipryks came to mind every time I've driven past the house on Oakdale and I wondered whether they were still there. My heart and thoughts are with Pam, Sharon and Mike, and all of your family. - Posted by: Judith Gaminek (Schoolmate of Pam) on: Jan 20, 2019

It's funny what you remember about someone you cross paths with in life. My memory of "Mrs. Cipryk" was her willingness to teach and share her skills. When just a youngster I made the ball team as short stop. Because it was her position, she taught me the correct way to stop the ball if it was on the ground. She told me to kneel down and line up my glove rather than bending from the waist. I carried that with me for many games. I remember that we weren't allowed play time until those piano practices of Sharon's were completed, too! She always welcomed me in her home and invited me to go swimming at the Y with the family and other things that I probably would never have been allowed to do at my own home. It doesn't surprise me that she eventually ended up a teacher because she had the gift of being able to relate to young people. My sincerest condolences to her family. She was an exceptional person. - Posted by: Joanna (Raines) LaForte (daughter's friend) on: Jan 19, 2019
