DAVID DUBNICOFF July 16, 1944 - January 20, 2019 David passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at St. Boniface General Hospital. David was the son of the late Ann and Benjamin Dubnicoff, and lived all his life in Winnipeg's north end, attending Champlain, Machray and St. John's High School. He graduated from the University of Manitoba (Arts) in 1967 and earned his Chartered Accountancy degree in 1970. He worked at Deloitte Haskins & Sells until 1977 and joined Moffat Communications' CKY Radio and TV divisions as Financial Controller. He retired after 20 enjoyable years to the good life of golf at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, where he served as President in 1988/1989. He managed to win the Chartered Accountants of Manitoba Golf Tournament in four different decades. He was also one of few to ever birdie all par threes at Elmhurst from the blue tees. Another highlight was winning a car with a hole-in-one at a charity tournament. David was on the Jeffries curling team, which scored an eight-ender at the Maple Leaf Curling Club. He loved winters in the Panama City Beach, Florida area and then the San Diego/Temecula wine country, where he made many friends over the years. Sadly, those days have come to an end after several years of dealing with CHF and COPD. David is survived by siblings, Ernie (Lainie) in San Diego, Jack (Carol) and Esther Dashevsky (Hy) in Winnipeg, Dora Berman (the late Elliot) of Toronto, and the late Gertie Dubnicoff of Owen Sound. He was a devoted uncle to many nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, and a special friend to Penny and Eddie Biluk. Many thanks to the staff at the St. Boniface General Hospital Emergency and Cardiology Department for their kind care. Cremation has taken place with no funeral service to be held. Donations in David's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 204-949-2000 or the Manitoba Lung Foundation, 204-774-5501.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Dubber and I met at St. Charles Country Club in 1964 when I was about 17 and he was about 20. No, we were not members. I was a busboy in the dining room and Dave was shining shoes in the men’s locker room. Our being there for many summers during university revolved around golf, that is getting to play for free as an employee. From that time forward we played golf together at least one game a year in either or all of Winnipeg, Vancouver and Palm Springs until a couple of years ago, that’s 53 years, 3 years longer than I have been married. After university we both entered the Chartered Accountancy program and articled at the same firm, Deloitte Plender. Dave was a senior there by the time I arrived. We often worked on the same audits both in town and out. We certainly enjoyed the out of town travel to exotic places like Flin Flon and Brandon. Although I left Winnipeg in 1985 ending up in Vancouver, Dave and I always seemed to get together. He came to Vancouver for a week in the summer for about 5 years to play golf in Washington with 30 of my friends who seamlessly became 30 of his friends, we all know Dave had the gift of the gab. Marie and I will miss you old friend, free of three putts forever! - Posted by: Randy Price (Friend) on: Feb 12, 2019

  • We were friends of Dave since high school and saddened to learn of his passing. I was not aware of all Dave's accomplishments, nor was I surprised. Probably the kindest man I ever met. Bob & Barbara King, Port Richey, Fl. - Posted by: Bob King (Friend) on: Feb 04, 2019

  • Dave was so reliable, dependable under all circumstances, really good with his numbers and placid even when times were tough. Funny - he taught me how to tie a tie in his own unique way, and I in turn taught others - particularly at training sessions - the knot became known here in Fiji as "The Dubnicoff" . You contributed so much to so many in your own quiet way. A privilege to have known you. May your gentle soul rest in eternal peace. - Posted by: Ken Clark (Colleague) on: Feb 02, 2019

  • We worked together at Moffat Communications for a number of years. Dave was always a kind, supportive and generous, soft spoken gentleman. As an accountant it was amazing how much trouble he had accurately totally his golf score! His name always brings back great memories of those amazing days. - Posted by: Roy Hennessy (Former workmate) on: Feb 02, 2019

  • I had the pleasure of working with Dave for over 15 years and found him to be a quality and popular gentlemen. His fellow employees at CKY TV and radio never had a bad word to say about Dave. We attended a curling bonspiel in Bemidji with fellow Deloitters and enjoyed far too many pints and many laughs. - Posted by: Bill Davis (Friend) on: Jan 30, 2019
