GERTRUDE STURGEON (nee JOHNSTON) October 23, 1938 - January 21, 2019 It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunty, great-aunty and friend, Gertrude, at Health Sciences Centre on Monday, January 21, 2019 with her loving family by her side. Family remaining to cherish her memory is her children, Bruce (Janice) and Holly (Donald); also her sisters, Violet Ernste, Betty Ann (Mike) Rourke; her brother Allen Johnston; her sister-in-law Ida Johnston as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gertrude (Coolie) was predeceased by her parents, Stanley and Gertrude Johnston, the love of her life Gordon Spence, and first husband David, her brothers, Joe (Dodo), William (Dookie) and Stanford (John Doggie) Johnston, sisters, Kathleen (Charlie) Dorvault (Toogalee); twin sisters, Jennifer and Jeanette, as well as numerous other relatives. Mom was born in Peguis and raised in Fisher Bay where she attended day school. After the birth of her children she moved to Winnipeg in the 1960s where she met Gordon who played the guitar and violin. Mom loved to join Gordon by singing as he played the great country songs of Georgie Jones, Kitty Wells and Tammy Wynette. In 1987, they purchased their first home on Pritchard where she lived for over 40 years. After the passing of her partner, she continued to remain active by taking care of her grandchildren, crocheting and sewing many beautiful clothing items. She was a unique fun-loving person who was smart as a whip, and had such a wonderful sense of humour, as she would come up with the funniest comments and things that she would do that would leave you howling with laughter. She had a twinkle in her eye and a strong spirit, she loved her family and her family loved her. Mom you will be so sadly missed by all your family and friends. Your memories will live on with us forever!! A prayer service to celebrate Gertrude's life will be held on Monday, February 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) with Pastor Jim Anderson officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. The family would like to extend special thanks to all the friends and family who visited Gertrude, also to the Health Sciences Staff on GH3 for their care and acts of kindness for our mom. Thanks to Peguis Chief and Council and Anderson Family Funeral Home for taking care of arrangements and for their compassion. Special thank you to Jerry, Allan, Darlene, Velma and Cheryl for always being there for her when she needed help in different areas of her life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Gertrude's memory to an organization providing research into a cure for cancer, diabetes or arthritis.
