HELEN SIGURDSON (nee EYJOLFSON) Beloved Mother and Grandmother, Helen, passed away at the Grace Hospital on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at the age of 85 years. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Dana Sigurdson (Doug Moors), son Michael Sigurdson and grandsons, Daley, Stefan and Kaden Moors. She is also survived by sisters, Val Taylor and Barbara Magnuson, sister-in-law Dorothy Eyjolfson and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Irene Hodgson and Jona Arnason and brother Wally Eyjolfson. Helen was born on January, 26, 1933 to Stefan and Gudrun Eyjolfson on a farm near Riverton. As the youngest of six children, Helen had many happy memories growing up on the farm. She graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital registered nursing course in 1954. Helen worked in New York and upon returning to Winnipeg worked as a nurse at Christie's Biscuits, the Manitoba Youth Centre and ended her nursing career as the Director of Care at the Tuxedo Villa Care Home. She was a very dedicated, caring and conscientious nurse who held herself and others to very high standards. Helen put concern for others before herself. She had a big heart and was a very kind, caring and supportive mother and grandmother. Her children and grandchildren were most important to her and she would do anything for them. She was also the most amazing knitter making scarves, socks, slippers, blankets and especially beautiful Christmas sweaters for her grandchildren and family. She was a proud Icelander and often made ponnokukur as a favourite treat for the family. She enjoyed travelling with her children and grandchildren, and there are many wonderful memories of trips especially to New Zealand and driving trips from the east coast to the west coast of Canada. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 28 at 12:30 p.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 200 Dalhousie Dr. She will be forever in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen's memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • To Helen Sigurdson’s family, you describe Helen exactly the way I will always remember her: “very kind, caring and supportive.” As a nurse, fairly new to Canada and navigating the deep waters of nursing in a foreign country, I had the privilege of having Helen as my Director of Care at Tuxedo Villa and at a critical juncture in my nursing career. What a tremendous privilege that became to benefit from a nursing leader who was always consistent, supportive, kind and encouraging. Helen helped me believe in my knowledge and skills, stood by me through challenging times and reassured me of the confidence she had in my caregiving. She certainly “put concern for others ahead of herself.” To her family, please know that you all shared one of the most wonderful persons I know with so many others. • Hello I had the privalage if working with Helen at Tuxedo Villa in the army 1990's. During that time we had a lot of laughs. I learned a lot from Helen and she was of great support to me in my position as administrator. I shall remember taking smoke breaks with Helen during which, along with Gwen, we solved the world's problems. I recall Helen was particularly fine of watching the latest Seinfeld tv episode. After I left Extendicare, I often used Helen's wisdom as a touchstone for my future dealings with residents and staff at other facilities. My sincere condolences to Helen's family. She often spoke of her children and grandchildren. - Posted by: Syd Moffitt (Colleague at Tuxedo Villa) on: Apr 16, 2019
