Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJON BARRY PETURSSON On January 20, 2019 Barry passed away at the age of 64, with his loving family at his bedside, after a year long gallant fight. Barry will be deeply missed by his wife of 34 years, Joan, brother Jeff, sister-in-law Linda (Chris), brother-in-law Neil, niece Katie and nephew Scott, cousin Carla (Rick), and his two special fur-buddies, Phoebe and Pip. Barry was predeceased by his father Petur, mother Joan, and brother, Drew. He will also be missed by his many friends and co-workers. Barry was born and raised in Winnipeg in the River Heights neighbourhood. He attended Grant Park High School and was a graduate of the University of Manitoba. Throughout his elementary and high school years, sports was a huge focus, with Barry participating on championship baseball teams and playing junior hockey with the Charleswood Hawks. A lifelong avid sports fan, Barry enjoyed following his favourite NHL and CFL teams, participating in fantasy pools and friendly betting with friends around the country and beyond. Barry loved to travel, with Maui's Kaanapali Beach, Estrella Mountain Ranch in Arizona and the cottage at Gimli being favourite destinations. Relaxing with family and friends while on holiday were times Barry cherished. Always a proud Icelander, one of the highlights of Barry's life was travelling back to the land of his heritage to run the Reykjavik marathon, and raise funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Barry's very successful real estate investment career led to relocations across the country where many lifelong friendships were made. For the last 20 years, Edmonton has been home where Barry held senior positions with Telus and the Alberta Teachers' Retirement Fund. The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses, doctors, physio and OT staff at the E. Garner King Critical Care Unit at University of Alberta Hospital and the Mazankowski Heart Institute for the care and support they afforded Barry and our family. As well, thank you to the many dear friends who kept in constant touch throughout Barry's illness. It meant so much! In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations in Barry's name be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Matthew Hower Foundation, 133 Aldershot Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R3P 0E2. A celebration of Barry's life was held in Edmonton on Friday, January 25, 2019.
