ALEXANDER DOW RAMSAY Peacefully, Alexander Dow Ramsay at 98 years young, passed away at the West Park Manor on January 19, 2019. Dow (Alex) was the oldest son born to Catherine and Alexander Ramsay from Arbroath, Scotland on December 12, 1920, in Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his second wife Vivian McQuillan, sister-in-law Ginny and son-in-law Tim. He is survived by his three children, Joy (Ian) MacLeod, Kathryn (Al) Ring and Paul (Alda) Ramsay, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and his first wife, Joyce. He is also survived by his brother Gordon, four nephews, their families and his three stepchildren, Laura, Jim and Lisa (Dave). Alex grew up in the West End of Winnipeg and was a member of the YMCA for over 80 years. He spent endless hours in gymnastics, swimming, running, curling, dancing at the Silver Y Club and at his favourite, Camp Stephens. He volunteered many hours for the United Way and the YMCA. He served in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War. He belonged to the Rotary Club and Shriners and was involved in many churches over the years, specifically Knox United, Crescent Fort Rouge and Cordova Bay, Victoria. Dad worked for 40 years at Great West Life Insurance Company. During that period, he and his wife Joyce raised their three children in St. Vital spending their summers at Minaki with extended family. In the early 1970s, Dad met Vivian and eventually they moved to Victoria where they enjoyed 22 years of retired life. He became a Pastoral/Spiritual Care Giver at the Victoria General Hospital where he found great fulfillment helping others in need. In 2012, he chose to spend his remaining years with his children and grandchildren back in Winnipeg where he was supported and cared for by many. There will be a Celebration of Life Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Garry United Church. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at West Park Manor for the dignity, respect and kindness shown to our father. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
