IRWIN SMITH November 5, 1942 - January 22, 2019 With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Irwin Smith. Predeceased by wife Margaret (May 2018). He is survived by his son Ken (Shelly); daughter Christine (Ron); grandchildren, Taylor and Dradon; sister-in-law Judy (Ray) and niece Tara. Growing up on the family farm in Charleswood, Irwin loved working on cars which lead him into the racing fraternity with a local sprint car family and many travels from track to track. As a mechanic, he found his calling working for the City of Winnipeg Fire Department fixing fire trucks. This knowledge assisted the Headingley Volunteer Fire Department get their first truck. He was also known for his love of building things. Many friends asked for advice or assistance from building decks to fixing up cottages. In their retirement years, Irwin and Margaret enjoyed being winter Texans and spending summers with family and friends out at their 'lake' (Netley Creek). He always had a smile on his face and enjoyed life to the fullest. A Celebration of Life will take place Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Ken's home: 1050 Miller Rd., West St. Paul. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Irwin and I were best friends all during our early years … we played in his sandbox together; rode bikes together; rode horses together and served together in Cadets and the Fort Garry Horse Militia. In our teens we answered our separate calling but each and every time I returned home, connecting with him and catching up on the news was a priority. Future visits to Winnipeg - Charleswood just won't be the same … RIP friend, I am honoured to have shared a part of your life. - Posted by: Fred Lang (Friend) on: Mar 26, 2022

  • Irwin was a lifelong friend of both Sam and mine. It was Irwin's dad who took my mom to the hospital when I was born. Irwin had a quiet and mild spirit and a smile for everyone. Both Margaret and Irwin were great people and good friends. I will always remember them. - Posted by: Kitty Zaik (Friend) on: Feb 06, 2019

  • Lived on the same street and went to the same school, missed an opportunity to cross paths in Yuma one year. Would have been interesting discussing sprint car racing and our childhood memories. Take care my friend, hold a place for the old gang. - Posted by: Bill McKennitt (Friends) on: Feb 02, 2019
