NORMAN EDWARD SANDERS May 28, 1929 - January 29, 2019 It is with great sadness that we announce the recent passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband and uncle, Norman Sanders, aged 89, of Winnipeg, on January 29, 2019 at the Seven Oaks Hospital. Norman was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Edla Sanders, brothers, Sherman and Robert Sanders, wife Marjorie Jean Sanders, and daughter Norma Jean Sanders. He will be remembered lovingly by his wife Vina and her family, as well as his immediate and extended family members including daughters, Roberta Archibald and Leslie-Anne Sanders, and sons, Ned Sanders and John Sanders. Norman was born near Simmie, SK at a time when there was no electricity, no indoor plumbing and as the eldest, he was the first of all the children to go to Stone Farm school. The family had limited means during the Dirty 30s as did most farming families. Despite this, Norman was very proud to graduate from Notre Dame College in Wilcox, SK. Norman went on to Teacher's College where he met his future wife of 40 years, Marjorie Jean Christie and settled in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Together they had five children whom he was tirelessly devoted to. In 1970 the family moved permanently to Winnipeg, MB. Norman was very proud of the community that he lived in. He was a dedicated member of the United Church of Canada, a tireless and active volunteer with the New Democratic Party and was on the Executive Committee of the Sir Sam Steele Royal Canadian Legion. Norm was a proud staff member of St. John's High School and along with his very good friend Bobby Jones, founded the first boys wrestling team. Norm taught full time at St. John's High School until his retirement in 1985. Norm was very proud of all of his grandchildren and their many accomplishments both in and outside of school. He will be forever loved and missed by us all. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral service will be held on Monday, February 4, 2019 at Kildonan United Church, 187 Kilbride Ave., at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I wish to send my condolences to Roberta and the Sanders family. As a teacher he was loved and remembered by many. He taught us well with many fond memories. As in later years a friend and colleague (there is a humorous story when he saw me the first time as a teacher at St John's High School), he even in a direct and indirect showed us rookies a great deal in teaching. At St. John's High School he and many of the staff acted like our parents during the day, always doing what is best for us. In later years he told how he became a teacher, his dad sort of influencing him to become one; the rest is history. It is always too soon to lose a loved one. He owns a corner in many hearts. My condolences to Norman Sanders family and friends. - Posted by: Frank Unger (Student & Friend) on: Feb 09, 2019

  • I was fortunate to not only having Mr. Sanders as my teacher but as my wrestling coach. I remember early morning practices at St.John and many tournaments. He was someone I looked up to as he was dedicated to us and firm when he needed to be. He was also the one to get me a job as a wrestling coach....although short live it was a great memory. In short Norm to me was a mans man. My sincere condolences to the family.....I also remember how often he spoke about his wife and kids Don Grant - Posted by: Don Grant (Student and wrestler) on: Feb 03, 2019

  • "Are you working hard or hardly working?" Mr.Sanders would always ask us as he would walk through the classroom, always a mischievous grin on his face like he was a kid himself and not a teacher. This grin, along with that mischievous glint in his eye let you know that you were being taught by a friend and not the typical teacher. A funny story about Mr.Sanders is when I was in grade 12 a couple of friends and I decided to go to Sam Steele for a pitcher of beer at lunchtime, we sat by the shuffleboard table by the bar at the back of the Legion furthest from the door enjoying our beer when in walks 3 teachers, Mr.Sanders, Mr.Bochinsky, and a third one I cannot remember right now. They sat at a table near the doors and ordered their beers. OH NO! WE'RE TRAPPED! we thought. If those teachers see us were doomed, but there's no other way out except the door they are sitting by. Sure enough they saw us! Now they're talking amongst themselves, we're sure they're talking about suspentions etc, then Mr.Sanders pushes Mr.Bochinsky towards us and we know it's bad, very bad, and then we were told "You didn't see us here and we didn't see you here." Then it clicked! Oh ya, they're not supposed to be drinking beer at lunchtime either! After graduating I would sometimes bump into Mr.Sanders at Sam Steele, My dad would go there every Friday, and it was evident how much Mr.Sanders just loved life and people. I thank him for the fond memories Dion Tetrault - Posted by: Dion Tetrault (Student) on: Feb 03, 2019
