EUGENE GILBERT MILANI Peacefully, with his family by his side, Gene passed away on February 5, 2019 at the Simkin Centre at the age of 95 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Eduardo and Lucia Milani, brothers, Ross and Peter, and sister Pierina Nazabin. Gene was born December 14, 1923 in Port Arthur, Ontario. He spent his youth in Port Arthur and, as a lad was able to find work during the Great Depression. He joined the Royal Canadian Army at the age of 19, serving overseas as a gunner and communications specialist during the Second World War. He returned safely home to Canada on a Red Cross Hospital ship. He took up telegraphy, initially hired by CPR and later, by CNR as an operator. He went on to become a train dispatcher for CNR from 1948 to 1984. It was while taking his telegraphy course that Gene met, and later married, his one and only love, Julia Rita Bruni. Together they raised a large family, frequently moving as a requirement of his job, before finally settling in Winnipeg in 1969. Gene was a proud and honourable man, a loving husband and a great father and grandfather. He enjoyed the simpler things in life, the love of family, fishing, a cold drink of beer, never giving up on the Blue Jays and repairing anything that was broken! He will be missed by Julie, his wife of 69 years, his children, Ed (Marie), Clara Fjeldsted (John), Marylouise Thompson (Bob), Ralph (Janine), Bob (Karen), Debbie (Steve Korman), Steve (Kim), John (Lori), Gloria Nixon (Al) and Karen (Jim Radul), his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, in-laws, nieces and nephews. We would like to extend our thanks to the amazing nurses, physicians and caregivers at the Simkin Centre who treated Gene with kindness and respect. Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. There will be no mass service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. ...The Silent Key...

  • My condolences to my Aunt Julie, and to my cousins and their families. It's been some time since I seen Gene. We did share a Christmas newsletter over the years and then later he and Julie would do a phone call instead, at Christmas time for an update on the family in Thunder Bay. Gene lived a long life and I hope the memories that he created eases your sadness. I hope he says hi to my mom Pierina Nascimben, gone but never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
