RIVAN KENNETH HALPRIN Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, cousin and friend. Ken passed away peacefully on Monday, February 11, 2019, at the age of 91, at the Health Sciences Centre. Ken was born in Winnipeg on August 5, 1927, the same day and month as his mother. The eldest of three children of Joseph, a lawyer, and Rae Halprin, a loving homemaker. Ken married his wife Elyse Samuels on January 17, 1951. Together they raised their children, Susan, Tracey and David. Ken proudly studied law and graduated in 1950 from the University of Manitoba. He began work as a law student at the firm of Andrews Andrews Thorvaldson and Eggertson. After his articles he worked as Counsel at Aronovitch & Leipsic with his father Joseph and then joined the practice of law in partnership with his father in 1951, and later with his brother Paul William. His love of the law continued long after his retirement from active practice in 2005 as he applied legal analysis to analyze and solve life's problems. Kenneth was a lawyer for over 50 years. Ken was an active pro-bono participant in the Manitoba Bar Association and other bar and community activities including the incorporation of the Hebrew Congregation of Winnipeg Beach. He was the co-draftsman of a Special Act of the Manitoba Legislature that created the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. Ken served as a Director of the Foundation, and on the Board of Governors and Audit Committee for many years. Ken was known for his love of gardening, reading and music. Ken loved to cook sometimes to great success and sometimes not so much. An avid athlete in youth, he actively participated in skiing and cycling throughout his life. The family enjoyed memorable summers boating and entertaining at their lakefront cottage in Boundary Park, Winnipeg Beach. His children, and latterly his grandchildren remember with great fondness his innate curiosity. He loved books and was a voracious reader, enjoyed fishing, photography and the humour of a great joke or funny limerick. Ken and Elyse spent their winters in Florida from 1978, and made many dear friends there. Predeceased by his parents, younger brothers, Paul (William) and Edward, and daughter Tracey, Ken is survived and will be sorely missed by his loving wife Elyse, of 68 years; his children, Susan (Bryan Klein) of Winnipeg and David (Linda Redman) of Toronto; his grandchildren, Baillie (Dan), Sarry (Scott), Julie (Alan) and Emily; his great-grandchildren, Lyla and Asher, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials in Kenneth's memory be sent to The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, 123 Doncaster Street, Winnipeg, MB (Donation Line: 204-477-7525). The funeral service will be held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2019.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I worked with Ken for a number of years as a legal assistant. He was a wonderful person and lawyer. His love for the law was only eclipsed by his love for his family. My deepest sympathies to Elyse and the family and all the many friends Ken made along the way. - Posted by: Michelle Smetana (Former employee) on: Aug 03, 2019

  • Our sincerest sympathies go out to Susan, Bryan, Baillie, Sarry, and Julie and their families on the loss of their dad/ grandfather. It's always hard to lose a dad - especially one who has been larger than life and has made such a positive difference to so many whose lives he has touched. As accomplished as he was in life, he has left a legacy of accomplishments that live on in his children and grandchildren. Our sympathies also to Elyse - she will miss him most. From your lake neighbours - Trish, Ed, and Mark - Posted by: Trish (friend) on: Feb 27, 2019

  • There are many memories between the Halprins and the Fingards to recount them all but I would like to especially pay tribute to Kenneth for the help he provided to us and our family over the years. Truly a fine person and we extend deepest condolences to his wife Elyse, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. May his memory be a blessing. - Posted by: MORLEY Fingard (cousin) on: Feb 15, 2019
