GEORGETTE MESTDAGH November 16, 1924 - February 8, 2019 GEORGETTE MESTDAGH (nee Standaert) - Do not cry for a soul set free, remember instead the precious memories. After battling Alzheimer's for many years Georgette Mestdagh died peacefully at River East Nursing Home on February 8, 2019 with family by her side. Missing our mom and remembering her with love are her sons: Brian (Barb), Laurie (Kristin), Ronald, Robert (Laura), her only daughter Maureen (Timm); grandchildren: Chad, Vennessa, Nadine, Genny, Heather, Sarah, James, Sumner, Ashley, Kaylee, Jessica and Jalen; eight great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Gerry Mestdagh and nieces, nephews and cousins. Georgette was predeceased by her parents, Palmyre and Florimond Standaert, her loving husband of 60 years, Frank, her brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Kelly (Christine) and Fred. Georgette was an only child, born on November 16, 1924 in Assenede, Belgium and came to Canada with her parents when she was five years old and settled in St. Boniface where she lived her entire life. She was a stay at home mom and was the busiest person we have ever known. It seemed like the washer, vacuum cleaner, oven and sewing machine worked in perpetual motion. Before sunrise until after sunset, she never stopped moving, except for a block of time in the afternoon that was reserved for her favourite soap operas. She was a skilled knitter and seamstress, and sewed much of our clothing when we were kids. She was a gardener extraordinaire. Working in her and her father's garden, she had a long list of clients waiting to buy her fresh vegetables. If she didn't grow it, we didn't eat it, which explains why we never ate asparagus until we were older and moved away from home. Her house was always immaculate and she loved to entertain. Our parents had many expected and unexpected guests drop in from both the city and the country and when they did, food was always involved. It was in her kitchen that our mother truly shone. She loved to bake, which she did almost daily, providing us with a supply of pies, cake and pastries. We suspect this was the cause of our sister's lifelong obsession with dessert. She travelled to Europe many times, but her favourite destination was Grand Forks, she was the ultimate bargain shopper. It was family though that was without doubt her greatest passion. There was nothing that she wouldn't and didn't do for us. She was the greatest mother we could have ever had. Thanks for everything Mom. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at River East Personal Care Home for the wonderful care and compassion shown Georgette over these many years. A funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at E.J. Coutu Funeral Home, 680 Archibald Street, Winnipeg.
