JOSEPH HOLYK June 5, 1924 - February 27, 2019 Peacefully in his sleep, with his wife Dorothy by his side, as she was for 67 years of married life together, Dad passed away at Riverview Health Centre. Joe will be lovingly remembered by his wife Dorothy, children, Randy (Dawn), Evelyn and Bryan, grandchildren, Matthew, Melissa and Veronica. He was predeceased by numerous family members over the years including infant grandson Justin. Dad was born and raised in Fort William, Ontario, where he worked for 32 years as a switchman for CN Rail, before he and Dorothy retired in Winnipeg to be closer to their children to support them as they raised their families. To know him meant you knew he never met a camera without a pose at the ready, a dance floor that wasn't calling his name, or a sporting event that wasn't worth watching. An accomplished five pin bowler, Joe competed for many years in multiple leagues, usually serving as a member of league executives. His proudest moment came as he realized the dream of every recreational bowler everywhere - the unforgettable night he rolled a perfect game. Along with Dorothy, he was a fixture at almost every hockey game, ringette game, school concert, dance and piano recital. No matter what the event, he and Dorothy hardly missed a one and beamed with pride as they led the chorus of applause from their usual spot in the front row seats. Dad was always right there when we needed him the most. He'd help tackle the project, try to fix what was broken, and persist to try and get the best possible deal along the way. He lived life with a clear sense of purpose, a great sense of humour and a remarkable sense of self. But more than anything, he was genuinely proud of each and every member of his family and loved them all dearly. Dad was competitive, musical, rhythmic, creative, compassionate, fun-loving, and honest. He was also lots of things to lots of people, but whether he was Joe, Sam, Dad or Grandpa, the best of what he always strived to be was authentic. He truly was one of a kind. He will be missed. The nurses and doctors at Riverview Health Centre are truly special people who have so thankfully answered a calling to care for people in their final days with such remarkable compassion, care and consideration. We are forever grateful for all of your efforts to bring Dad comfort and peace. To honour Joe's wishes, a private service has been held.
