DR. ERNIE COHEN It is with a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Dr. Ernie Cohen, husband, father and Zadie on March 19, 2019. Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife, Undine, children, Leanne (Bruce) and Scott (Marie-Helen), grandchildren, Chase (Lauren), Tysen (Laura), Sasha (Dylan), Ovide, Zoë and Ella, stepdaughter Janice, and the mother of his children, Naomi and brother Larry. He is predeceased by his parents, Louis and Lucie Cohen. Ernie was one of the McAdam kids who attended Luxton and St. John's High School. He then attended the U of M, and U of AB for dentistry from which he graduated in 1958. After a few years of practicing general dentistry, he studied orthodontics at U of T, graduated in 1966 and came back to Winnipeg where he began his orthodontic practice. Ernie was elected to serve on the executive board of directors of the Manitoba Dental Association. Due to his passion for his chosen profession, he taught at the Faculty of Dentistry for 29 years while maintaining his orthodontic practice. He was very much involved in a lifelong love of sports, tennis, curling, basketball and in later years, much humorous competitive golfing with his wife Undine. A celebration of Ernie's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on March 21, 2019 at Thomson In The Park, 1291 McGillvary Blvd. The family asks if you wish to extend your sympathies, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Siloam Mission.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Dr. Ernie Cohen to me was the best friend I ever had. I was born with a cleft pallet and a plastic surgeon Dr. Merkley had referred my case to Ernie Cohen becoming a patient of his practice for 12 years. I always looked forward to my appointments downtown at the Dental Arts on Vaughn Street east of The Bay Department store. Ernie moved his practice over to the Medical Arts a few years later. I will say this he was a very patient man with a goal in mind to correct what nature had short changed my appearance. After my case was completed in July 21, 1977 I was gifted the following tribute: Orthodontic Diploma This is to certify that "Billy Smith" has successfully completed a full series of treatments for orthodontic correction. This is presented with the best wishes from the entire staff. Presented on July 21, 1977 for a lifetime of happy smiles. Dr. Baker Dr. E.Cohen ------------- ----------------- Attest Orthodontist I wish all the best to Dr. Cohen and family members and every patient he had granted many more happy smiles I'm sure. P.S. Better late than never. - Posted by: William (Bill) Smith (Patient from his practice (12 years age 6 to 18)) on: Apr 05, 2021

  • To Dr. Cohen's family, I just wanted to share my heartfelt condolences over the loss of Dr. Cohen. I think of him quite often, almost everytime I look in the mirror and admire what a great job he did of my teeth! He worked with me for 3.5 years to correct my teeth 30 years ago and I vividly remember his humour, his stuborness (when he refused to remove my braces in time for Grad pictures) and his innovation, gifting me with one of only 2 prototype retainers when my braces finally came off. That retainer lasted 25 years. My thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Lynda Parsons (Patient) on: Mar 29, 2019

  • My heartfelt condolences to all of Ernie's family and friends. Ernie was one of my most memorable characters and a wonderful boss. He was never in a rush- which at times drove me crazy in a 5 minute appointment book!- but that also transferred to the time he shared with you. His stories, his pipe, his love of his job and his love of his family, were the essence of Ernie that will always stay with me. Thank you Ernie for all the great laughs and your kindnesses. - Posted by: Heather Abbott (nee Syme) (Employee and friend) on: Mar 20, 2019

  • Dear Undine, Leanne, Scott, Naomi and Larry, I have so many wonderful memories of working with Ernie. He had such a great sense of humor and was an amazing story teller. I started with Ernie as receptionist, my first real job. I had the opportunity to become his assistant and loved ever minute. He taught me so much. He will be missed by so many people for his dedication to his profession but even more, for his warmth love of life. - Posted by: Jan Lowe (Friend/employee ) on: Mar 20, 2019
