GARY ANDRE VERFAILLIE
July 20, 1951 - April 5, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Verfaillie after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Gary was extremely dependable and possessed a tremendous work ethic that helped lead to his long career. He started his career with the telephone company in Newfoundland where he made many friendships and enjoyed living on the island. After moving back to Manitoba, Gary continued his career with MTS. He enjoyed working in the rural communities, the outdoors and never missed a day of work in 30 years.
Gary displayed incredible honesty, integrity and generosity in all aspects of his life. He had a quiet strength and a gentle soul balanced with a zip of incredible wit and subtle humour. He was a gracious man who rarely complained. He enjoyed the simple things in life, the sunshine on his face, and a cold beer on a hot day, dinners with family and morning coffee with his sister.
Gary also enjoyed a little adventure; he was well travelled and enjoyed a good road trip with family or friends.
Gary's life touched so many, he was a father, brother, grandfather, husband and friend. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by Lois, daughter Darcie (Joel), son Remi (Lori), and grandson Aiden. Also left to mourn are his brother Dan (Jenny), sisters, Irene (Ron) and Lynda (Bob), many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Gary was predeceased by his parents, Remi and Bernadette, and his brother Jules.
An intimate Celebration of Life has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Canada.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • It is with such sadness that only today have I learned of Gary's passing. We were neighbours on Cambridge (corner of Fleet for me) and Gary, Glenn Teskey, Alex Young and myself often walked to school together at Montrose. His family was so kind and always very welcoming. The last time I saw Gary was at a Grant Park reunion some years ago now. I was so pleased he remembered me and we had lots of laughs reminiscing. I do hope this will somehow reach his family even though some time has passed. - Posted by: Karen Comack (School friend and neighbour) on: Feb 24, 2020

  • I am so sad to be without my lifelong friend Gary - I grew up with Gary on Cambridge Street - 4 doors down from my family home. We met at age 5 when he squirted me with a water gun and then ran home and hid behind his screen door - his mother invited me in for tea and Gary and I became best friends. In 1968 Gary bought a 650 Triumph motorcycle and made me his passenger - I then bought a 1970 Triumph motorcycle of my own and we were inseparable Gary and I went went on many trips together over the years - in 1991 we went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and met many people and drank many beers. We went on a trip to Thailand in 2002 and backpacked for 3 weeks exploring all of the cites and spent the last week with Gary's good friend Ross. Gary was a great friend - he was honest / hard working and a sincere friend with a great sense of humour His favorite phrase was "very good then". I will miss him a lot and was glad to spend time with him at the hospital before his passing. My condolences to Gary's family. Love you Gary Don (Celia) - Posted by: Don Richardson (Friend) on: Apr 22, 2019

  • Gary was a part of our family Cambridge Street from the age of 5. He will lovingly be remembered by all of us. Thinking of you all. - Posted by: Carol (Richardson) Hyman (Friend) on: Apr 13, 2019

  • I found Gary to be a very honorable man with high ethical standards. He was never judgemental or highly critical of others or their views. He was very accepting and respectful of others. Truly a great man with few like him. You were a great brother to my wife Irene and brother in law. I will miss you when I go quad riding this summer in Conconully, Washington but your quick witt will make me smile when I think of you. Rest in Peace my friend, no more pain and suffering. - Posted by: Ron Peterson (Brother in law) on: Apr 13, 2019

  • We are so VERY sorry for the loss of Gary. I knew him since he was a baby. As we lived 2 doors away on Cambridge Street, for many years, I will always remember The Verfaillie Family. Not long ago we enjoyed being with them at their family BBQ. It was a celebration of Gary's Birthday, and we got to meet his extended family members. It was a very happy day for me. Reuniting with them all was fantastic. We will never forget being included with your family. Take Care, Danny, Lynda, and Irene. Love you all, - Posted by: Doug and Judy Walton (Old friends) on: Apr 13, 2019

  • Very sad to learn of Gary's passing. I used to work with Gary so I can attest to his hard work ethic, once 30 minutes was up for lunch so was he, most cases he would work through lunch and all breaks. He was a perfectionist and taught me many things. Gary was more than a co-worker, he was a friend; in fact we went to the 2000 Olympics in Australia...yes he loved to travel and had a keen sense of adventure. His dry wit always made me chuckle. He was not scared to put someone in their place but in a good way. He was respected by everyone that had the pleasure to work with him. Rest in peace my friend.
